15:5-6 live in complete harmony: This phrase (see study note on 12:16) refers to the whole orientation of how someone thinks. A mindset of harmony is important for Christian unity (see 12:3-5, 16; Phil 2:2-5).
In this section, Paul said that believers who are strong, as he defined “strong” in 14:1–9, should help believers who are weak (also as in 14:1–9). The strong are to encourage the weak, with the result that all may have hope in God.
Paul prayed that God would help the believers, strong and weak, to live in unity and glorify God.
Paul urged the believers to always welcome one another, because doing that glorifies God. Jesus served the Jews to show that God’s word was true and confirm his promises, which in turn encourages the non-Jews to glorify God for his mercy to them.
Then Paul prayed that God would fill them with joy and peace in their faith, with the result that the Holy Spirit would fill them with hope.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
Carry weak believers, encourage them and accept them
Help believers who are not strong
Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement grant you
¶ I pray to God, the one who enables us to endure troubles and who encourages us. I pray that he will give to you the ability/power
¶ God is the one who gives us the power to stand strong and causes us to be encouraged. I ask him to cause/enable you
may…God…grant you: Here Paul prayed that God might enable the believers in Rome to live in unity. Here are other ways to translate these words:
May…God…give to you
I now ask…God…to give to you
I am praying that…God…will cause you
grant you: Here the word you refers to the person receiving what is given. It does not refer to the thing given. For example:
grant to you
grant: The Greek word here is usually translated “give.” The word grant has that meaning here.
the God who gives endurance and encouragement: This phrase indicates that God is the source of endurance and encouragement for believers. It connects to “endurance” and “encouragement” in 15:4 but here refers generally to any kind of endurance and encouragement. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
the God of endurance and encouragement (ESV)
God, the source of all perseverance and all encouragement (REB)
This description of God occurs in the middle of Paul asking him to do something. In some languages it is more natural to separate those two things. For example:
God is the one who makes us patiently endure and encouraged. I pray that he will…
The ability to endure troubles and the ability to be encouraged come from God. And I pray that he will…
harmony with one another
to be of the same mind/thinking among each other,
to be united with one another,
harmony with one another: The Greek is more literally “to think the same thing among one another.” Here it refers to living in unity and thinking that other believers are good people. Paul wrote about differences of opinion in chapter 14 that were causing problems among the believers. Here he implied that those differences were not important compared to serving God with one purpose, helping and encouraging each other. Here are other ways to translate this clause:
to be of the same mind with one another (NASB)
the same attitude of mind toward each other (NIV11)
unity with one another (NET)
one another: This refers to all the believers in Rome. Your translation should not limit it to the “strong” group or the “weak” group.
in Christ Jesus,
according to the will of Christ/Messiah Jesus.
as Jesus, the one/person whom God appointed to save/rescue people, wants you to.
in Christ Jesus: This phrase indicates that Jesus wants believers to live in unity. What Paul said in 15:5b agrees with that. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
according to Christ Jesus (NASB)
the way Christ Jesus wants (NCV)
Christ Jesus: The order of the words Christ Jesus emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah. However, in some languages the order Christ Jesus is not natural. See how you translated this phrase in 8:34.

ὁ & Θεὸς τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως
the & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Θεός τῆς ὑπομονῆς καί τῆς παρακλήσεως δῴη ὑμῖν τό αὐτό φρονεῖν ἐν ἀλλήλοις κατά Χριστόν Ἰησοῦν)
Paul is using the possessive form to describe God as being characterized by patience and encouragement. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [the God who is characterized by patience and encouragement]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

This could refer to: (1) the example of Christ. Alternate translation: [according to the example of Christ Jesus] (2) the will of Christ. Alternate translation: [according to the will of Christ Jesus] (3) both the example and will of Christ. Alternate translation: [according to Christ Jesus’ will and example]
