SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:22–33: Paul planned to visit Rome

In this section, Paul explained his plan to go to Spain and visit the believers in Rome on the way. He also explained that he was currently going to Jerusalem with a gift of money for the poor believers there from the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. Once he was finished with that, he planned to go to Spain.

Paul asked the believers in Rome to pray for him. Paul wanted to avoid being blocked in his ministry by Jews who did not believe in Jesus. He also asked them to pray that the gift he was taking to Jerusalem would be acceptable to the believers there. If it was, he would have joy and be able to enjoy his visit with the believers in Rome.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul wanted to visit the believers in Rome on his way to Spain

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome (NIV)

15:30a

Now I urge you, brothers,

Now: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now introduces a new but related topic. It is not a time word. Translate it in a way that is natural for starting to write about a new topic or theme.

I urge you, brothers: The word brothers is in the end of what Paul said to them, both in the Greek and in the BSB. In some languages this word must be first. For example:

Brothers, I appeal to you

I urge you: The Greek word that the BSB translates as urge has a wide range of meaning. Many scholars believe it means “exhort” here.Moo (page 909) and Dunn (page 878) both say it does not mean “ask.” Here are other ways to translate this clause:

I appeal to you (ESV)

I encourage you (GW)

brothers: This word refers to all the believers living in Rome, both men and women. The word indicates a close relationship between believers because God has made them his (adopted) children. See how you translated this word in 1:13 or 15:14.

15:30b

by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit,

by our Lord Jesus Christ: This phrase indicates that Paul appealed to the Roman believers in the name of Jesus Christ.See Moo (page 909). Paul asked them to pray for him because they all believed in Jesus and this is something that Jesus wanted them to do. For example:

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (NLT)

by the love of the Spirit: This phrase indicates that love from the Holy Spirit is the basis for Paul appealing to them to pray for him.Moo (page 909) and Cranfield (page 776) call it “ground,” which has the same meaning as “basis” here. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

by the love that the Spirit creates (GW)

on the basis of the love from the Spirit

because of…the love that the Holy Spirit gives us (NCV)

15:30c

to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

to join me in my struggle by praying: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as struggle refers to working hard at helping someone. Here it refers to earnestly praying for Paul, as Paul prayed for himself in taking the collection of money to Jerusalem. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

to join me in earnest prayer to God on my behalf (NRSV)

to join fervently with me in prayer to God on my behalf (NET)

for me: This phrase indicates that Paul wanted the Roman believers to pray for him, as he explained in 15:31a–b.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀδελφοί

brothers

See how you translated this word in [1:13](../01/13.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

διὰ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Πνεύματος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρακαλῶ Δέ ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καί διά τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Πνεύματος συναγωνίσασθαι μοί ἐν ταῖς προσευχαῖς ὑπέρ ἐμοῦ πρός τόν Θεόν)

The two occurrences of by in this verse indicate that what follows each one are the bases for Paul to urge his readers. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [on the basis of our Lord Jesus Christ and on the basis of the love of the Spirit]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Πνεύματος

the love ˱of˲_the Spirit

This could refer to: (1) the love that the Spirit gives to Christians. Alternate translation: [the love from the Spirit] (2) the love that belongs to the Spirit. Alternate translation: [the Spirit’s love]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Πνεύματος & ταῖς προσευχαῖς

the love ˱of˲_the Spirit & the prayers

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of love and prayers, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [how you love from the Spirit … what you pray]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

συναγωνίσασθαί μοι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρακαλῶ Δέ ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καί διά τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Πνεύματος συναγωνίσασθαι μοί ἐν ταῖς προσευχαῖς ὑπέρ ἐμοῦ πρός τόν Θεόν)

Paul speaks of praying fervently as if it were a struggle. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly or use a simile. Alternate translation: [to pray intensely together with me] or [to pray intensely with me as if striving together]
