1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2Esteem it all joy, my brothers, when you might fall into various trials, 3knowing that testing of your faith produces endurance. 4And let endurance have its perfect work, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5Now if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask from God, the One giving generously to all and not finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But let him ask in faith, doubting nothing, for the one doubting is like a wave of the sea, being blown and being tossed by the wind. 7For let that man not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord. 8He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 9But let the brother of low degree boast in his exaltation, 10and he who is rich, in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a flower of grass. 11For the sun has risen with its burning heat and withered the grass, and its flower has fallen, and the beauty of its appearance has perished. Thus also the rich man will fade away in the midst of his pursuits. 12Blessed is the man who endures trial, because, having been approved, he will receive the crown of life that He has promised to those loving Him. 13Let no one being tempted say, "I am being tempted by God." For God is unable to be tempted by evils, and He Himself tempts no one. 14But a man is tempted, being drawn away and being enticed by the own desire. 15Then desire having conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin having become fully grown, brings forth death. 16Do not be misled, my beloved brothers. 17Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of shifting. 18Having willed it, He brought us forth by the word of truth, for us to be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. 19Know this, my beloved brothers. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow unto anger; 20for man's anger does not produce the righteousness of God. 21Therefore, having put aside all filthiness and abounding of wickedness, receive in humility the implanted word, being able to save your souls. 22But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves, 23because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, this one is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror, 24for he has viewed himself and has gone away, and immediately he has forgotten of what manner he was. 25But the one having looked intently into the perfect law, that of freedom, and having continued in it, not having been a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work--this one will be blessed in his work. 26If anyone seems to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his heart, the religion of this one is worthless. 27Pure and undefiled religion before the God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their tribulation; to keep oneself unstained from the world. 2My brothers, do not with partiality hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory. 2For if a man might come into your assembly in splendid apparel with gold rings, and a poor man in shabby apparel also might come in, 3and you should look upon the one wearing the splendid apparel and should say, "You sit here honorably," and to the poor should say, "You stand," or, "Sit there under my footstool," 4then have you not made a distinction among yourselves and have become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those loving Him? 6But you have dishonored the poor. Are not the rich oppressing you and they dragging you into court? 7Are they not blaspheming the good Name having been called upon you? 8If indeed you keep the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well. 9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 10For whoever shall keep the whole Law, but shall stumble in one point, he has become guilty of all. 11For the One having said, "You shall not commit adultery," also said, "You shall not murder." But if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the Law. 12So speak and so act as being about to be judged by the Law of freedom. 13For judgment without mercy will be to the one not having shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. 14What is the profit, my brothers, if anyone says to have faith, but has no works? Is the faith able to save him? 15Now if a brother or a sister is without clothes and lacking of daily food, 16and anyone out from you says to them, "Go in peace; be warmed and be filled," but does not give to them the needful things for the body, what is the profit? 17So also, faith by itself if it has not works, is dead. 18But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works. 19You believe that God is one. You are doing well! Even the demons believe that, and shudder! 20But do you want to come to know, O foolish man, that faith apart from works is worthless? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, having offered his son Isaac upon the altar? 22You see that his faith was working with his works, and by his works, his faith was perfected. 23And the Scripture was fulfilled, saying, "And Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness," and he was called a friend of God. 24You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone. 25And likewise was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, having received the messengers and having sent them forth by another way? 26For just as the body apart from spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. 3Not many of you should be teachers my brothers, knowing that we will receive greater judgment. 2For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, this one is a perfect man, able indeed to bridle the whole body. 3Now if we put bits into the mouths of the horses for them to obey us, we turn about even their whole body. 4Behold also the ships, being so great and being driven by strong winds, are turned about by a very small rudder wherever the impulse of the one steering resolves. 5Thus also the tongue is a small member, and boasts exceeding things. Behold a small fire, how great a forest it kindles. 6The tongue also is a fire, the world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, defiling all the body, and setting on fire the course of nature, and itself being set on fire by Gehenna. 7For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued and has been subdued by the human race, 8but no one of men is able to subdue the tongue; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, those being made according to the likeness of God. 10Out of the same mouth proceed forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11Does the spring pour forth out of the same opening both fresh and bitter? 12Is a fig tree able, my brothers, to produce olives? Or a vine, figs? Neither is a salt spring able to produce fresh water. 13Who is wise and understanding among you; let him show his works out of the good conduct, in the humility of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and self-interest in your heart, do not boast of it and lie against the truth. 15This is not the wisdom coming down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where jealousy and self-interest exist, there will be disorder and every evil thing. 17But the wisdom from above is indeed first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and of good fruits, impartial, sincere. 18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those making peace. 4From where come quarrels and from where conflicts among you? Is it not from there, out of your passions warring in your members? 2You desire and do not have. You kill and covet and are not able to obtain. You fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, that you may spend it in your pleasures. 4Adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility with God? Therefore whoever has chosen to be a friend of the world is appointed an enemy of God. 5Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit that He has made to dwell in us yearns with envy"? 6But He gives greater grace. Therefore it says: "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 7Therefore subject yourselves to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and have purified hearts, you double-minded. 9Be grieved and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and the joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. 11Do not speak against one another, brothers. The one speaking against his brother or judging his brother speaks against the Law and judges the Law. But if you judge the Law, you are not a doer of the Law, but a judge. 12There is one Lawgiver and Judge, the One being able to save and to destroy. But who are you judging the neighbor? 13Come now, those saying, "Today or tomorrow we will go into this city, and will spend a year there, and will trade, and will make a profit," 14who know not what is on the next day. What is your life? It is just a vapor, appearing for a little while, and then vanishing. 15Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord should will, both we will live and we will do this or that." 16But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17Therefore to the one knowing to do good, and not doing, it is sin. 5Come now, you rich, weep, wailing over the miseries that are coming upon you. 2Your riches have rotted, and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3Your gold and silver have corroded, and their rust will be for a testimony against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have treasured up in the last days. 4Behold, the wage of the workmen having harvested your fields, having been kept back by you, cries out, and the cries of those having harvested have entered into the ears of the Lord of Hosts. 5You lived in luxury and lived in self-indulgence upon the earth. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and have put to death the righteous; he does not resist you. 7Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the earth, being patient for it until it receives the early and latter rains. 8You also be patient; strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord has drawn near. 9Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing before the doors. 10Brothers as an example of suffering evils and of patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11Behold, we count blessed those having persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. 12But before all things, my brothers, do not swear, neither by heaven, nor the earth, nor any other oath. But let your "Yes" be yes, and the "No," no, so that you might not fall under judgment. 13Is anyone among you suffering hardships? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises. 14Is anyone among you sick? Let him call near the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, having anointed him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer of faith will save the one ailing, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he might be one having committed sins, it will be forgiven him. 16Therefore confess the sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man being made effective prevails much. 17Elijah was a man of like nature to us, and with fervent prayer he prayed for it not to rain, and it did not rain upon the earth three years and six months. 18And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. 19My brothers, if anyone among you might wander from the truth, and someone should bring him back, 20let him know that the one having brought back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover over a multitude of sins.
