uW Translation Notes:
Note 1 topic: translate-names
Σωσθένην
Sosthenes
The word Sosthenes is the name of a man.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τὸν ἀρχισυνάγωγον
the synagogue_leader
Since Luke says in [18:8](../18/08.md) that Crispus was the synagogue leader in Corinth, the implication is that during the year and a half that had passed since then, another man, Sosthenes, had become the leader. Since the Jewish leaders who were hostile to Paul were also hostile to him, a further implication is that, like Crispus, Sosthenes had become a believer in Jesus. You can include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. (However, see next note for another possibility that some interpreters favor.) Alternate translation: [the new synagogue leader, who believed in Jesus]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐπιλαβόμενοι δὲ πάντες Σωσθένην τὸν ἀρχισυνάγωγον, ἔτυπτον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βήματος
˓having˒_taken_hold_of and all Sosthenes the synagogue_leader ˱they˲_˓were˒_striking_‹him› before the tribunal
This could mean: (1) that the Jewish leaders were beating Sosthenes because he was a believer in Jesus. Alternate translation: [the Jewish leaders were all beating him] (2) that the Gentiles who were present in the court beat Sosthenes because the Jews had caused trouble by bothering Gallio with an insignificant matter and Sosthenes was the synagogue leader. Alternate translation: [the Gentiles who were in the court were all beating him]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
πάντες & ἔτυπτον
all & ˱they˲_˓were˒_striking_‹him›
Luke likely says all here as a generalization for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [they were angrily beating him]
TSN
Tyndale Study Notes:
18:17 It is most likely that the Greeks beat Sosthenes to express their hostility to the Jews; it is possible that the Jews attacked their own synagogue leader because he was unsuccessful in pleading their case. Sosthenes may be the same man Paul later mentions as “our brother” (1 Cor 1:1), but it is uncertain, as the name was fairly common.
