In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.
Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.
The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

In this paragraph Paul scolded the Corinthians for divisions in the church, and for their greed while eating the Lord’s Supper.
And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved: There are two ways to interpret this verse:
Paul acknowledged that divisions were necessary. For example:
It is no bad thing, either, that there should be differing groups among you so that those who are to be trusted among you can be clearly recognised. (NJB) (NJB, NASB, RSV)
Paul was ironic and did not mean that divisions are necessary. He used an ironic statement to say that divisions are bad. For example:
But, of course, there must be divisions among you so that those of you who are right will be recognized! (NLT)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). A majority of commentaries support this interpretation. If you choose interpretation (2), do some study of how irony and sarcasm are expressed in your language.
And indeed, there must be differences among you

For you have to separate into different groups
And indeed: The two Greek conjunctions that the BSB translates as And indeed can also be translated as “For…also,” as in the NASB. Paul used these conjunctions to introduce a reason why he was willing to believe what he had heard about divisions. He understood that God allowed these differences for a purpose, which he stated in 11:19b. Some English versions do not translate these conjunctions. Other ways to introduce this reason include:

there must be differences among you: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as there must be is more literally “it is necessary for there to be” or “there need to be.” God knew it was necessary for divisions to occur, and he permitted them for a purpose.
differences: The Greek word that the BSB translates as differences is not the same as the word “divisions” in 11:18b. However, in this context it refers to the same thing. It is OK if you use the same word in your translation.
to show which of you are approved.
to make clear who among you(plur) God approves of.
so that it will be evident which of you are genuine believers.
to show which of you are approved: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as which of you are approved is more literally “the tested ones” or “the approved ones.” It refers to people who had passed a test that showed them to be genuine believers. The conflicts and divisions in the church showed who these genuine believers were.

so that people will know the ones who are right from the ones who are wrong

Here, For introduces the reason for which Paul “in part believes” what he has “heard” ([11:18](../11/18.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express For with a word or phrase that clearly gives a reason for why Paul “believes it.” Alternate translation: [In fact,] or [I do this since]

This sentence could be: (1) a simple statement about how God uses factions to reveal those who are approved. Alternate translation: [God wishes to make evident among you those who are approved, and factions among you are a necessary part of this] (2) an ironic statement that identifies factions as the necessary result of people who want to show themselves off as those who are approved. Use a standard form in your language to indicate irony, especially with the phrase those who are approved, which would be spoken from the Corinthians’ perspective. Alternate translation: [some people consider it necessary indeed for there to be factions among you, so that they, who consider themselves to be “those who are approved,” may display themselves publicly among you]

Here, factions has similar meaning to “divisions” in [11:18](../11/18.md). The word factions focuses more on the content of the differing beliefs and practices than “divisions” does; “divisions” emphasizes the differences themselves. If your language can clearly express these distinctions, you could use words that express these two ideas. If your language does not clearly express these distinctions, you can translate factions with the same word you used for “divisions.” Alternate translation: [divisions]

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are approved rather than focusing on the person doing the “approving.” If you must state who did the action, you must choose a subject that fits with whether you understand this sentence as ironic or not. The subject could be: (1) God, if the sentence is not ironic. Alternate translation: [whom God approves] (2) the people themselves, if the sentence is ironic. Alternate translation: [who approve of themselves]

Here Paul does not state how or why the ones approved will become evident. Depending on whether the sentence is ironic or not, may become evident could imply that: (1) the factions are God’s way of testing and revealing who is approved, since those who continue to genuinely believe are approved. This is the implication if the sentence is not ironic. Alternate translation: [God may reveal also those who are approved] (2) the factions are the means by which some people show off what they think about themselves as approved. This is the implication if the sentence is ironic. Alternate translation: [also those who are approved may show themselves off]
