OET (OET-LV) Likewise also the cup after the time to_dine saying:
This the cup the new covenant is in the my blood, this be_doing, as_often_as if you_all_may_be_drinking it, in the my remembrance.
OET (OET-RV) Similarly, after the dinner he took the cup and said, “This cup represents the new agreement which will be sealed by my blood. As often as you all celebrate, drink it in memory of me.”
In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.
Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.
The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.
Here are some other possible section headings:
How to observe/celebrate the Lord’s Supper
Instructions about the Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper should be honored
In this paragraph Paul told about how Jesus started the Lord’s Supper.
In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying,
Similarly, after supper Jesus took the cup and said,
After they had eaten supper Jesus also picked up the cup. He said,
In the same way: The phrase In the same way means “In the same way that Jesus picked up the bread and thanked God for it.”
after supper: These events took place during a Passover meal, which always took place during an evening.
He took the cup: Here, the cup refers to the cup of wine that was in front of Jesus. People traditionally drank a cup of wine at the end of a Passover meal. At the end of the meal Jesus picked up the cup filled with wine that was on the table.
The words He took are not in the Greek text. The BSB added these words in order to make a complete English sentence.
Here is another way to translate this clause:
When supper was over, he did the same with the cup (GW)
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood;
“This cup of wine is the new covenant made through my blood.
“The wine in this cup signifies/represents the new covenant that God is making as a result of my blood.
This cup is the new covenant in My blood: The Greek text is almost the same as Luke 22:20b. Refer to your translation and the notes on that passage. It is good to translate this literally. If a literal translation does not convey any meaning, it may be possible to say:
This cup represents/signifies the new covenant in my blood
This cup is like the new covenant in my blood
cup: The word cup refers to the wine in the cup. In some languages it may be better to translate this as:
cup of wine
new: The Greek language makes a distinction between “new of a different kind” and “new of the same kind.” The word used here implies “a new one of a different kind.” It is the same word that is used in the phrase “New Testament.”
covenant: A covenant is an agreement or promise made between two people or groups of people. The cup of wine was a symbol of the agreement that God made with people through the death of Jesus. See covenant in the Key Biblical Terms.
in My blood: The phrase in My blood means “through my blood” or “by my blood.” The covenant was made by means of the blood that Jesus shed on the cross. His blood made the new covenant possible.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
sealed in my blood (GNT)
made with my blood (GW)
made as a result of my blood
blood: The blood was Jesus’ blood that he shed when he died on the cross. This is a way of speaking about Jesus’ death.
Here are some other ways to translate this word:
the blood of my death (NCV)
by the shedding of my blood (NLT)
do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Whenever you(plur) drink from this communion cup, drink in order to remember me.”
When you drink this wine, think about me.”
do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me: Another way of ordering these phrases is:
When you drink this, do it to remember me. (NCV)
do this: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as do this means “continue to do this.” Jesus told his disciples to make this a custom.
as often as you drink it: The phrase as often as you drink it refers to any time the disciples drink wine from the cup in celebrating the Lord’s Supper.
it: The pronoun it refers to the cup. In some languages it may be necessary to make it clear that it is the wine in the cup that the disciples were to drink.
in remembrance of Me: The phrase in remembrance of Me means “in order to remember me.” Jesus started the custom of drinking wine together to help the disciples remember him and how he died for them.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
ὡσαύτως καὶ τὸ ποτήριον
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
Here Paul omits some words that may be needed in your language to complete the thought. Paul omits these words because he stated them (“he took”) in [11:23](../11/23.md), and the Corinthians would have understood them from that verse. If your language does need these words, you could supply them here. Alternate translation: [in the same way also he took the cup]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
(Occurrence -1) τὸ ποτήριον
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
Here the Corinthians would have understood cup to refer to the drink inside the cup, which in Paul’s culture would have been wine. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express cup by more explicitly referring to what would be in the cup. Alternate translation: [the drink … drink] or [the wine … wine]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations
λέγων, τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι; τοῦτο ποιεῖτε, ὁσάκις ἐὰν πίνητε, εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν.
saying (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
If you do not use this form in your language, you could translate these statements as indirect quotes instead of as direct quotes. Alternate translation: [saying that this cup was the new covenant in his blood, and that you should do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of him]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι
this (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
Here Paul refers to how Jesus identified the cup as the new covenant in my blood. This figure of speech has been interpreted in a number of ways. The wine in the cup could somehow become Jesus’ blood, or Jesus’ blood could be present in some way when people drink from the cup, or the wine in the cup could represent or memorialize Jesus’ blood. Because of the variety of interpretations and the significance of this metaphor, you should preserve the metaphor if there is any way to do so. If you must express the metaphor in a different way, use a form that could fit with as many of the listed interpretations as possible. Alternate translation: [This cup represents the new covenant in my blood]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι
in ¬the my blood
Here, in my blood is a spatial metaphor that could refer to: (1) how the new covenant has been inaugurated or initiated by Jesus’ blood. Alternate translation: [initiated by my blood] (2) how the cup can be identified with the new covenant. Alternate translation: [because of my blood] or [because it contains my blood]
Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns
τοῦτο ποιεῖτε
this ˓be˒_doing
Here, this could refer to: (1) doing what Jesus has done, including everything he did with the cup. Alternate translation: [Perform this ceremony] or [Do these things] (2) just drinking from the cup. Alternate translation: [Drink from the cup]
Note 7 topic: writing-pronouns
ὁσάκις ἐὰν πίνητε
as_often_as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
Here, it refers to the cup and thus also the drink inside the cup. This does not mean that believers are supposed to Do this every time they drink from any cup. Rather, whenever they drink from the cup in the context of the remembrance of Jesus, they should Do this. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate as often as you drink it to identity more clearly what it means. Alternate translation: [as often as you drink from the cup in this ceremony] or [as often as you drink from the cup]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν
in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind remembrance, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “remember.” Alternate translation: [to remember me]
Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
ἐμὴν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὡσαύτως καί τό ποτήριον μετά τό δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τό ποτήριον ἡ καινή διαθήκη ἐστίν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐάν πίνητε εἰς τήν ἐμήν ἀνάμνησιν)
When Jesus here refers to me, he is referring more specifically to what he has done and will do for his followers, particularly how he is about to offer himself for them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express me and think that Jesus is just speaking about personal memory by clarifying that me refers to particular actions done by me. Alternate translation: [of what I am doing for you] or [of how I am going to die for you]
OET (OET-LV) Likewise also the cup after the time to_dine saying:
This the cup the new covenant is in the my blood, this be_doing, as_often_as if you_all_may_be_drinking it, in the my remembrance.
OET (OET-RV) Similarly, after the dinner he took the cup and said, “This cup represents the new agreement which will be sealed by my blood. As often as you all celebrate, drink it in memory of me.”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
