Section 11:17–34: Eat the Lord’s Supper in the proper way

In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.

Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

In this paragraph Paul taught believers to examine themselves before eating the Lord’s Supper, so that God will not judge them.

11:31a

Now if we judged ourselves properly,

Now: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now introduces a contrast to what happened in the preceding verse. Some English versions (such as GNT, NJB) do not explicitly translate this conjunction. Other English versions use the word “But” (such as the NIV, ESV, and NASB).

if we judged ourselves properly: The phrase if we judged ourselves properly refers back to “each one must examine himself” in 11:28. It means “if we examined ourselves before taking part in the Lord’s Supper.” Paul wanted the believers to think about their own attitudes and motives.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

if we(incl) examine our hearts before eating and drinking

if we think/consider/look at our hearts

if we correct ourselves

11:31b

we would not come under judgment.

we would not come under judgment: The phrase we would not come under judgment is a passive phrase. In some languages it may be more natural to use an active verb and supply the subject. For example:

Here Paul is making a conditional statement that sounds hypothetical, but he is already convinced that the condition is not true. He has already stated in the last verse that the Corinthians are being judged, which means that we are indeed judged. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a condition that the speaker believes is not true. Alternate translation: [But were we to actually examine ourselves]

Here Paul is speaking about examining ourselves in the context of the Lord’s Supper, as the similarity of this statement to [11:28](../11/28.md) shows. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state explicitly that Paul is still speaking about examining in the context of the Lord’s Supper. Alternate translation: [we were examining ourselves at the Lord’s Supper]

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are judged rather than focusing on the person doing the “judging.” Alternate translation: [God would not judge us]
