In this section Paul wrote about how men and women should dress during public worship. He wanted the women to cover their heads and the men to remain bare-headed. This was appropriate and proper and the custom of the other churches.

In this paragraph Paul shows from nature that men should wear short hair and women should wear long hair.

but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?: The Greek word that the BSB translates as glory is the same word as in 11:7. It refers to something that brings honor to a person. A woman’s long hair brings her honor and dignity. She can take pride in it because everyone considers it beautiful. See glory, sense A3c in KBT.
In many languages the key term for glory applies only to God. In this case you may need to:
Focus on the element of honor or pride. For example:
it is her pride (RSV)
it brings honor to her
people praise her for it
Focus on the element of beauty. For example:
it is a thing of beauty (GNT)
she makes herself beautiful
people see that it is beautiful
For long hair is given to her as a covering.
For God has given a woman long hair to cover her head.
For women have long hair to cover their heads.
For: The conjunction For introduces Paul’s reason for what he said in 11:15a. Some English versions, such as the GNT, do not explicitly translate this word.
long hair is given to her as a covering: The clause long hair is given to her as a covering is passive. In some languages it may be more natural to use an active verb and supply a subject:
For God gave her long hair as a covering.
as a covering: The word covering refers to a shawl or scarf worn by both men and women. Paul said that a woman’s long hair served the same purpose as a shawl. He did not imply that she did not need a head covering because she had long hair.

This is the second part of the rhetorical question that began in the last verse. Paul does not ask this question because he is looking for information. Rather, he asks it to involve the Corinthians in what he is arguing. The question assumes that the answer is “yes, nature does teach this.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this question with a strong affirmation. If you use the following alternate translation, you should translate the previous verse as a separate affirmation. Alternate translation: [However, if a woman has long hair, it is glory for her.]
