Section 11:17–34: Eat the Lord’s Supper in the proper way

In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.

Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

In this paragraph Paul taught believers to examine themselves before eating the Lord’s Supper, so that God will not judge them.

11:29a

For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body

For: The conjunction For introduces the reason for what Paul said in 11:28.

anyone who eats and drinks: The word anyone applies to all Christians.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

without recognizing the body: The Greek word that the BSB translates as recognizing is more literally “distinguishing” or “discerning.”

without careful regard for the body (NET)

if you do not recognize the meaning of the Lord’s body (GNT)

the body: There are two ways to interpret the expression the body:

  1. The body represents the Lord’s body which was sacrificed for us. For example:

    eat and drink without thinking, “This is the Lord’s body.”

    without thinking about the broken body of the Lord

    they do not think about how the Lord died for them

  2. The body represents people who believe in the Lord. For example:

    fail to understand that you are the body of the Lord (CEV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1) which has stronger support in the commentaries.See Thiselton p. 893 and Morris p. 161. Fee p. 563 represents option (2). However, many versions translate it literally to allow for either interpretation, and it may be possible for you to do so as well.

This verse is complicated by a textual issue:

  1. Some Greek manuscripts have only the word body. For example:

    the body (NJB) (BSB, NJB, RSV, NET, NASB, NCV, REB, ESV)

  2. Some Greek manuscripts say “the body of the Lord.” For example:

    the Lord’s body (GNT) (GNT, NIV, CEV, GW, NLT, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow option (1), which is followed by the UBS Greek New Testament. Although “the Lord” is not in the best Greek manuscripts, it can be understood as implicit information. You may choose to add it if it helps to make the meaning clear.

eats and drinks judgment on himself.

eats and drinks judgment on himself: The phrase eats and drinks judgment on himself means “he brings judgment on himself through his eating and drinking.” By taking part in the Lord’s Supper in a wrong way, a person causes God to judge him.

judgment: The word judgment refers to God’s decision that something is wrong.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

God will punish him because of the way he eats and drinks

General Comment on 11:29a-b

In some languages it may be natural to reorder 11:29, as the NASB has done:

For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. (NASB)

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Γάρ ἐσθίων καί πίνων κρίμα ἑαυτῷ ἐσθίει καί πίνει μή διακρίνων τό σῶμα)

Here, body could refer to: (1) the “church,” which is the body of Christ (for a similar use of body, see [12:27](../12/27.md)). The point would be that people are behaving during the Lord’s Supper in a way that does not respect fellow believers, who are the body of Christ. Alternate translation: [without discerning that fellow believers are the body] (2) the presence of the body of Christ in the Lord’s Supper itself. The point would be that believers are participating in the Lord’s Supper in a way that does not respect how Christ’s body is present in the bread and wine. Alternate translation: [without discerning the presence of the Lord’s body]

Here Paul speaks as if people could “eat and drink” judgment. By speaking this way, Paul means that the result of their “eating and drinking” is not physical or spiritual nourishment but judgment. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [is judged as a result of eating and drinking] or [eats and drinks with the result that he receives judgment]
