Section 11:17–34: Eat the Lord’s Supper in the proper way

In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.

Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

In this paragraph Paul told about how Jesus started the Lord’s Supper.

11:26a

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup: This verse is not a quotation of Jesus’ words. This is Paul’s comment on what Jesus said.

For: The conjunction For introduces Paul’s explanation of the saying that the Lord’s Supper is a remembrance of Jesus.

you declare/announce that the Lord has died

until He comes: The phrase until He comes means “until the Lord comes.” Because the Lord has already come once, in some languages it may be clearer to say:

until he comes back

until the Lord returns

General Comment on 11:26a-b

To make it clear that these are not Jesus’ words, but Paul’s comment on what Jesus said, it may be helpful to say “we” instead of “you.” For example:

Whenever we(incl) eat this bread and drink this cup, we(incl) proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

In many churches the pastor says these words out loud every time the Lord's Supper is celebrated. It would be good to read them out loud now and be sure they flow smoothly and sound good in an oral style.
