Section 11:2–16: Men and women should dress appropriately to worship God

In this section Paul wrote about how men and women should dress during public worship. He wanted the women to cover their heads and the men to remain bare-headed. This was appropriate and proper and the custom of the other churches.

Now: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now here indicates that Paul was starting to talk about the next topic. Some English versions do not translate this conjunction. Introduce this new topic in a way that is natural for your language. Another way to translate this is:

and: The conjunction and introduces a second reason Paul praised the Corinthians.

for maintaining the traditions: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as maintaining the traditions can also be translated as “following the teachings.” This refers both to believing and to doing the things Paul taught.

the traditions: The Greek word that the BSB translates as traditions often refers to information that a teacher learns from someone and then teaches to others. Here it refers to Christian teachings.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

just as I passed them on to you: Paul said that his readers had not altered his teachings. They followed them in the way that he had taught them.
