SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:17–34: Eat the Lord’s Supper in the proper way

In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.

Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

Here are some other possible section headings:

How to observe/celebrate the Lord’s Supper

Instructions about the Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper should be honored

Paragraph 11:23–26

In this paragraph Paul told about how Jesus started the Lord’s Supper.

11:23a

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:

For: The conjunction For introduces a reason why the Corinthians should follow Paul’s instructions about how to observe the Lord’s Supper.

I received from the Lord: Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

I learned this from the Lord

The Lord taught this to me

In some languages it may be clearer to make explicit what Paul received from the Lord. He received information about what Jesus had said and done when he taught his disciples to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

I received this teaching/tradition from the Lord

the Lord: Here, the Lord refers to the Lord Jesus.

what I also passed on to you: Paul taught the same things to the believers in Corinth that he learned from the Lord. The word also means Paul did two things with the message. He received it from the Lord and he also passed it on to the Corinthians. The word also does not refer to any other teachers besides Paul.

Here is another way to translate the word also:

I received this from the Lord and then I passed it on to you

11:23b

The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,

The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread: The BSB has followed the Greek word order. In some languages it may be more natural to translate the two clauses separately:

On the night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread.

on the night: The Lord Jesus was betrayed late at night. He took the bread earlier in the evening of the same day.

He was betrayed: The phrase He was betrayed is literally “he was handed over.” This is a passive verb. It was Judas who betrayed Jesus. He led Jesus’ enemies to him and showed them whom they should arrest. If it is more natural in your language to use an active verb with an explicit subject, you may say:

on the night Judas betrayed him

on the night Judas handed him over to his enemies

took bread: The phrase took bread means “picked up bread.” Jesus probably picked up a loaf of bread from a plate that was in front of him on the table. Jesus held the bread in his hands while he spoke the following words.

bread: This bread was a round loaf made without yeast. Use the same word for bread that you used in 10:16. Refer to the notes there.

uW Translation Notes:

This could refer to: (1) how Paul learned the tradition he is about to recount indirectly from the Lord. In other words, Paul learns about these things from others, who received the tradition directly from the Lord. Alternate translation: [from others who knew the Lord I received what the Lord himself did, which] (2) how Paul learned the tradition directly from the Lord. In other words, the Lord himself revealed this information to Paul. Alternate translation: [I received directly from the Lord what]

Note 1 topic: translate-unknown

Here, on the night states that the events that Paul will describe all happened “during” one specific night. Use a natural way to refer to “during the night” as the time in which the events occur. Alternate translation: [during the night when]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ᾗ παρεδίδετο

in the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγώ Γάρ παρέλαβον ἀπό τοῦ Κυρίου ὅ καί παρέδωκα ὑμῖν ὅτι ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ νυκτί ᾗ παρεδίδετο ἔλαβεν ἄρτον)

Here Paul refers to the story about how Jesus was arrested. One of Jesus’ closest disciples, Judas Iscariot, made a deal with the religious leaders to “betray” Jesus to them (See: [Matthew 26:14–16](../mat/26/14.md); [Mark 14:10–11](../mrk/14/10.md); [Luke 22:3–6](../luk/22/03.md)). After Jesus eats with his disciples and spends time praying, Judas leads the religious leaders to Jesus, and they arrest him (See: [Matthew 26:47–50](../mat/26/47.md); [Mark 14:43–46](../mrk/14/43.md); [Luke 22:47–48](../luk/22/47.md); [John 18:2–12](../jhn/18/02.md)). Paul is not primarily interested in this part of the story, but he mentions it to explain when Jesus took bread. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express what on the night in which he was betrayed refers to with a footnote to explain the context or include some short, extra information. Alternate translation: [on the night in which he was handed over to die]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

παρεδίδετο

˱he˲_˓was_being˒_giving_over

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on Jesus, who was betrayed, rather than focusing on the person doing the “betraying.” If you must state who did the action, Paul implies that “Judas Iscariot” did it. Alternate translation: [Judas betrayed him]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς & ἔλαβεν ἄρτον

the Lord Jesus & took bread

Beginning here and continuing in [11:24–25](../11/24.md), Paul tells the story of what is often called “The Last Supper.” This is Jesus’ last meal with his closest disciples before his death, and Paul narrates some things that he said and did during this last meal. Since Paul himself states the details, you should not need to state anything more explicitly than he does. The story of “The Last Supper” can also be found in [Matthew 26:20–29](../mat/26/20.md); [Mark 14:17–25](../mrk/14/17.md); [Luke 22:14–23](../luk/22/14.md).
