OET (OET-LV)And_they_captured the_two_of the_commanders_of Midyān DOM ˊOrēⱱ and_DOM Zəʼēⱱ and_they_killed DOM ˊOrēⱱ at_the_rock_of ˊOrēⱱ and_DOM Zəʼēⱱ they_killed at Zəʼēⱱ and_they_pursued (to) Midyān and_the_head_of ˊOrēⱱ and_Zəʼēⱱ they_brought to Gidˊōn from_the_other_side of_Yardēn.

OET (OET-RV)They chased after the Midianites and captured their two princes, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock now calledOreb’s rock’, and they killed Zeeb at a winepress now calledZeeb’s winepress’, and they brought their heads back across the Yordan to Gideon.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-names

אֶת־עֹרֵ֣ב וְאֶת־זְאֵ֗ב

DOM ˊOrēⱱ and=DOM Zəʼēⱱ

The words Oreb and Zeeb are the names of men.

Note 2 topic: translate-names

בְּצוּר־עוֹרֵב֙ & בְיֶֽקֶב־זְאֵ֔ב

at,the_rock_of ˊOrēⱱ & at, Zəʼēⱱ

The expressions the rock of Oreb and the winepress of Zeeb are the names of places. Some languages may present these names as titles. Alternate translation: [at the Rock of Zeeb … at the Winepress of Oreb]

Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

וְרֹאשׁ־עֹרֵ֣ב וּזְאֵ֔ב הֵבִ֨יאוּ֙

and,the_head_of ˊOrēⱱ and,Zeeb brought

Since the author is referring to two people, it might be more natural in your language to use the plural form of head. Alternate translation: [and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶל־גִּדְע֔וֹן מֵעֵ֖בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּֽן

to/towards to/towards Gidˊōn from_[the],other_side of,Jordan

This could mean: (1) that the soldiers from Ephraim pursued the fleeing Midianite soldiers across the Jordan River, bringing the heads of Oreb and Zeeb with them, and when they met Gideon on the east side of the river, they presented the heads to him. This would mean that [8:4](../08/04.md) is resuming the story after this episode. Alternate translation: [to Gideon after he crossed the Jordan] (2) that the soldiers from Ephraim pursued the fleeing Midianite soldiers across the Jordan River, found and killed Oreb and Zeeb on the east side of the river, and then brought their heads back to Gideon on the west side of the river. This would mean that the phrase they chased after Midian is a summary of what happened in the first part of the verse. Alternate translation: [back across the river to Gideon]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:25 Oreb (“raven”) and Zeeb (“wolf”) were military leaders, in contrast to Zebah and Zalmunna, who were kings (8:5). This capture was commemorated in the subsequent names of the rock and winepress where they were captured.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
