OET (OET-LV)Therefore some of the Farisaios_party were_saying, this one the man is not from god, because he_is_ not _keeping the day_of_rest.
Others were_saying:
How is_ sinful a_man _able to_be_doing such signs?
And was a_division among them.

OET (OET-RV)“Well clearly that man is not from God,” some of them said, “because he doesn’t respect the Rest Day.”
¶ However others said, “But if he’s just a sinner, how could he do miracles like that?”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸ Σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔλεγον Οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές οὐκ ἐστίν οὗτος παρά Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τό Σάββατον οὒ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καί σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς)

The phrase he does not keep the Sabbath means he disobeys the regulations for the Sabbath that God gave in the law of Moses. The Pharisees added many regulations which they considered to be equal with those that God had given. It was these additional regulations that Jesus was disobeying, thereby making the Pharisees very angry with him. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [he does not obeying our Sabbath regulations]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος

not (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔλεγον Οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές οὐκ ἐστίν οὗτος παρά Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τό Σάββατον οὒ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καί σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς)

Here, from is used to indicate Jesus’ origin. He could only have authority if he came from God. Since Jesus was not obeying the Pharisees’ rules, they refused to believe that God had given him authority. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [This man does not have God’s authority]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν?

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔλεγον Οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές οὐκ ἐστίν οὗτος παρά Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τό Σάββατον οὒ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καί σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς)

Some people are using a rhetorical question here to emphasize that Jesus’ signs prove he is not a sinner. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate these words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [A sinner cannot possibly do such signs!]

σημεῖα

signs

See how you translated this term in [2:11](../02/11.md). See also the discussion of signs in Part 3 of the General Introduction to the Gospel of John. Alternate translation: [significant miracles]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς

˓a˒_division was among them

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of division, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [they divided themselves against each other]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:1-41 At the Festival of Shelters (chs 7–8), Jesus claimed to be the light of the world (8:12). Now John tells about Jesus giving light, both physically and spiritually, to a blind man who lived in darkness (see 9:5). The story ends with a splendid reversal of roles: The blind man who was assumed to be in spiritual darkness could see God’s light, whereas the Pharisees, who could see physically and were thought to be enlightened, were shown to be spiritually blind.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
