OET (OET-LV)Therefore the parents of_him answered and said:

OET (OET-RV)His parents answered, “We know that he’s our son, and we know that he was born blind.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀπεκρίθησαν Οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καί εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἐστίν ὁ υἱός ἡμῶν καί ὅτι τυφλός ἐγεννήθη)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [he was blind when his mother bore him]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:1-41 At the Festival of Shelters (chs 7–8), Jesus claimed to be the light of the world (8:12). Now John tells about Jesus giving light, both physically and spiritually, to a blind man who lived in darkness (see 9:5). The story ends with a splendid reversal of roles: The blind man who was assumed to be in spiritual darkness could see God’s light, whereas the Pharisees, who could see physically and were thought to be enlightened, were shown to be spiritually blind.
