10:6 It’s not obvious what Yeshua is referring to here with ‘son of peace’.
In Section 9:1–6 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles to preach and to heal. Here in Section 10:1–24 he sent out a larger group of disciples to different towns. Jesus told this larger group of disciples to visit many towns. They would visit the towns to find out which people and towns would receive Jesus and which would not receive him. Jesus ended his instructions to these disciples by telling them that God would punish the towns where the people did not welcome him.
Notice that in Luke 10:1 there is a textual issue concerning the number of disciples Jesus sent. You should make a decision about this textual issue before you decide on the heading for this section.
Another possible heading for this section is:
Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples to preach and to heal people
Luke is the only gospel writer who wrote about this event. However, there are parallel passages for some of the verses in this section in Matthew 9:37–38, 10:7–16, and 11:21–23.Marshall, p. 412.
If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him;
If the person who lives there loves/seeks peace, then the peace/blessing that you(plur) requested will be/remain with him.
If the head of the house wants God to bless him, then God will give that household the peace/blessing that you(plur) asked/prayed for.
If the leader of the household wants to experience this goodness and kindness, then God will indeed give it to him and his family.
If a man of peace is there: The clause If a man of peace is there refers primarily to the head or leader of the household. It means, “If the head of the household is a man of peace.” But this clause probably includes the other people who live in the house. For example:
If the people living there are peace-loving (CEV)
a man of peace: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as a man of peace is literally “a son of peace.” It refers to a person who seeks and loves peace. A person like this would desire to have peace with God and to experience his blessing. So the person would welcome the disciples into his home and receive what they taught.
In some languages, you may need to make some of this implied meaning explicit. For example:
loves peace and is willing to listen to you
desires to receive peace and blessing from God
wants God to bless/proper him
your peace will rest on him: The phrase your peace means “the peace/blessing that you have spoken/requested from God.” The phrase will rest on him means that he will truly receive this peace/blessing. Some other ways to translate this whole clause are:
the peace that you asked God to give him will remain with him
your prayer for peace will bless them (CEV)
God will prosper/bless him
if not, it will return to you.
But if he does not love/seek peace, he will not receive your(plur) peace/blessing.
But if he does not want God’s blessing, God will not give it to him.
But if he does not want to receive these blessings, then God will not bless that home.
if not: The phrase if not is an ellipsis. The complete clause would be “if a man of peace is not there.” This implies, “If the leader of the home does not receive you.” Here is a way to fill in the missing information:
But if they are not peace-loving (CEV)
it will return to you: The clause it will return to you indicates that the family would not receive the blessing that the disciples spoke when they entered the home. It would be as if the disciples had never spoken the words of blessing. This phrase probably does not mean that the disciples would receive the blessing instead of the family. Other ways to translate this clause are:
he will not receive the blessing/peace you asked God to give him
God will not give it to him

The expression son of refers to a person who shares the qualities of something. Alternate translation: [a person who wants peace with God and with people]

Here, upon creates a spatial metaphor. It means that this person will experience the peace that God gives in a special and lasting way. Alternate translation: [he will deeply experience the peace that you wish him]

Jesus describes peace as a living thing that could choose to leave one person and go to another person. Alternate translation: [you will experience that peace yourselves instead]
10:1-20 The Lord now chose seventy-two: The mission of the Twelve (9:1-6) represented Jesus’ ministry to Israel; this mission represented his outreach to the Gentiles. The number 72 represents the nations of the world. Genesis 10 lists 70 nations in the Hebrew text, but the Septuagint—the Greek Old Testament—lists 72. Luke, who used the Septuagint, probably wrote 72, and then a later scribe “corrected” the text to agree with the Hebrew. The point is that the Good News is for both Jews and Gentiles.
