OET (OET-LV)And the Yaʸsous having_heard, said to_him:
Still one thing is_lacking to_you, all as_much_as you_are_having, sell and distribute to_the_poor, and you_will_be_having treasure in the_heavens, and come, be_following after_me.

OET (OET-RV)Then you’re lacking only one more thing,Yeshua added. “Sell everything you own and distribute the money to the poor, then you’ll have treasure in the heavens. Then come and follow me.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:18–30: It is hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom

The theme of this section is similar in some ways to the theme of the preceding section. In both sections Jesus talked about entering the kingdom of God. This section also contrasts with the preceding one. In that section the children represent humble people who easily depend on God and welcome his rule/reign. The ruler in this section represents people who are rich and powerful. It is very difficult for such people to welcome God’s reign and submit to it.

The ruler asked Jesus how he could obtain eternal life. Jesus told him to obey God’s commands. Among the Jews, this was a well-known answer to the question of how to obtain eternal life. The ruler said that he had obeyed God’s commands since he was a child. Then Jesus told him to sell what he had, give the money to the poor, and become his disciple. But the ruler valued his riches too much to do that. Then Jesus said that it is very hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom.

At the end of the section Jesus promised that people who left their possessions and family behind to serve him would receive great rewards.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught that riches make it difficult to obtain eternal life

A Rich Man’s Question (NCV)

The rich young man (NJB)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 19:16–30 and Mark 10:17–31.

18:22a

On hearing this, Jesus told him,

On hearing this, Jesus told him: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as On hearing this, Jesus told him is literally “Having-heard, Jesus said to him.” In Greek the verb “Having-heard” connects what the leader said with what Jesus was about to say to him. This verb is used in the same way in 7:9 before Jesus praised a centurion’s faith and in 8:50 before he told Jairus to have faith. See also the usage in 14:15 before a man said, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

In some languages it may not be natural to say here that Jesus heard the ruler’s words, because this fact is obvious from the context. If that is true in your language, you may want to connect these statements in a different way. For example:

In reply Jesus said

Then Jesus replied

18:22b

“You still lack one thing:

You still lack one thing: This clause is literally, “Still/yet one (thing) to you is lacking.” It answers the question that the ruler asked Jesus in 18:18b about what he must do to receive eternal life. Here Jesus was saying, “There is one more deed/thing that you need to do in order to live forever with God.” Here is another way to translate this:

There is still one more thing you need to do. (GNT)

This one thing is explained in Jesus’ next statement in 18:22c–d.

18:22c

Sell everything you own and give to the poor,

Sell everything you own and give to the poor: These words imply that the man should sell everything that he owned. Then he should take the money that he received from selling his possessions and give that money to poor people. In some languages it may be necessary to make that explicit. For example:

sell everything you own and give the money/proceeds to poor people

18:22d

and you will have treasure in heaven.

and you will have: The clause in 18:22d is the result of 18:22c. If the man did as Jesus told him in 18:22c, he would have treasure in heaven. Some other ways to translate this connection are:

Then you will have…

If you do that, you will have…

As a result, you will have…

you will have treasure in heaven: The clause you will have treasure in heaven implies that God would reward the ruler for giving his earthly wealth to poor people. That reward would be a treasure in heaven.

Your translation should not imply that God would simply take the same money that was given to poor people and put it in heaven. One way to avoid that wrong meaning is to indicate that the treasure in heaven is a reward. For example:

As a result, God will reward you with treasure in heaven.

treasure in heaven: The Greek word that the BSB translates as treasure refers to something that has great value. This word is often used to refer to wealth or riches. Jesus did not say what the treasure in heaven would be. This phrase implies blessings that are greater than literal money.

The phrase treasure in heaven also occurred in 12:33.

heaven: Here the word heaven refers to the place where God lives. It is also the place where believers will live with God after they die. See heaven, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.

18:22e

Then come, follow Me.”

Then come, follow Me: The commands Then come, follow Me indicate that after the ruler had given away his possessions, he should return to Jesus and become his disciple. Another way to translate this is:

Then return to me, and be/become my disciple.

The word follow also occurred in 5:27.

uW Translation Notes:

Alternate translation: [Sell all your possessions] or [Sell everything that you own]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

πτωχοῖς

˱to˲_˓the˒_poor

Jesus is using the adjective poor as a noun in order to indicate a group of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [to people who are poor]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

δεῦρο, ἀκολούθει μοι

come ˓be˒_following (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀκούσας Δέ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἔτι ἕν σοί λείπει παντᾶ ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον καί διάδος πτωχοῖς καί ἕξεις θησαυρόν ἐν οὐρανοῖς καί δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοί)

As in [5:27](../05/27.md), to follow Jesus means to be one of his disciples. Alternate translation: [come with me as my disciple]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
