SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 19:28–44: Jesus approached Jerusalem

As Jesus approached Jerusalem in this section, his many disciples were very excited. He came riding on a donkey. This fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 that he would come as a gentle, humble king. The crowd of disciples praised him in a way that showed that they were welcoming him as their king (19:38). They believed that he was the Messiah whom the Jews had been awaiting for many generations.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem (NRSV)

Many people celebrate as Jesus enters Jerusalem

People of Jerusalem greeted Jesus as king

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, and John 12:12–19.

19:34

“The Lord needs it,” they answered.

“The Lord needs it,” they answered: The two disciples responded to the owners just as Jesus had told them to in 19:31b. You should translate in the same way here. The context implies that the owners then allowed the two disciples to take the donkey. Mark 11:6 makes this explicit. In many languages it may be helpful to make it explicit here, as well. For example:

The two disciples replied, “The Lord needs it.” Then its owners permitted them(dual) to borrow it.

they answered: In Greek, the phrase that the BSB translates as they answered comes before the quotation. The GNT, like the BSB, places this phrase after the quotation. Place it where it would be natural in your language.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, ὅτι ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

they (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Δέ εἶπαν ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει)

The implication is that when the owners of the colt heard this, they allowed the disciples to take it. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [So they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And the owners let them take it]

ὁ Κύριος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Δέ εἶπαν ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει)

The disciples refer to Jesus by a respectful title. Alternate translation: [the Lord Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:28-40 Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem fulfilled Zech 9:9-10 and symbolically announced that he was the Messiah, the King of Israel.

OET (OET-RV)“The master needs it,” they answered.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
