OET (OET-LV)And of_them releasing the colt, the masters of_it said to them:

OET (OET-RV)and when they were untying the colt, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 19:28–44: Jesus approached Jerusalem

As Jesus approached Jerusalem in this section, his many disciples were very excited. He came riding on a donkey. This fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 that he would come as a gentle, humble king. The crowd of disciples praised him in a way that showed that they were welcoming him as their king (19:38). They believed that he was the Messiah whom the Jews had been awaiting for many generations.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem (NRSV)

Many people celebrate as Jesus enters Jerusalem

People of Jerusalem greeted Jesus as king

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, and John 12:12–19.

19:33a

As they were untying the colt,

As they were untying the colt: The two disciples had begun to untie the colt. They had not finished untying it when they were interrupted.

19:33b

its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?”

its owners asked: This phrase introduces the question that the owners asked the two disciples. In some languages it may be necessary to first mention that the owners were there and saw the disciples. For example:

its owners saw what they were doing and asked

its owners: The phrase its owners indicates that more than one person owned the donkey. Perhaps a family owned it.

Why are you untying the colt?: Here the owners asked Jesus’ two disciples the question that Jesus had predicted in 19:31a. The question implies that the owners were surprised and displeased to see the two disciples untying their donkey. The owners wanted to know the reason why the disciples were untying the colt. Here is another way to translate this:

Why are you untying our colt? (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

τί λύετε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λυόντων Δέ αὐτῶν τόν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρός αὐτούς Τί λύετε τόν πῶλον)

The owners of the colt are speaking to the two disciples, so you would be dual, if your language uses that form. Otherwise, it would be plural.

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

(Occurrence -1) τὸν πῶλον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λυόντων Δέ αὐτῶν τόν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρός αὐτούς Τί λύετε τόν πῶλον)

See how you translated colt in [19:30](../19/30.md). Alternate translation: [the young donkey … this young donkey] or [the young riding animal … this young riding animal]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:28-40 Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem fulfilled Zech 9:9-10 and symbolically announced that he was the Messiah, the King of Israel.
