Section 19:11–27: Jesus told a parable about a king and his ten servants

Many of Jesus’ followers expected that when they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus would establish the kingdom of God and begin to reign as king. He told the parable in this section to help them understand that events would happen differently than they expected.

There are two main ideas that Jesus taught through this parable:

Jesus, like the important man in the parable, was going away and would not return until after God made him king. In the meantime, the Jewish people would reject Jesus and God would punish them when he returned.
While Jesus is gone, his disciples must serve him faithfully and use whatever he has given them to glorify him.

And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’

The king replied, ‘You^(sing) will rule five of my cities.’
The king/chief said, ‘Your^(sing) reward is to rule/govern five of my towns.’
His master praised him too and said to him, ‘I reward you^(sing) by appointing you as chief over the people in five cities.’

And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities’: The statement that the BSB translates as And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities’ is literally “And he said also to this one, ‘And you, be over five cities.” This statement implies that the master spoke similarly to the second servant as he spoke to the first servant. It implies that the master approved of him also and rewarded him. Some ways to make this clear are:

And he rewarded him also, saying, “As for you, you will rule over five cities.”

“Well done!” the king said. “You will be governor over five cities.” (NLT)

In some languages it may be more natural to translate the meaning without a direct quote. For example:

His master rewarded him by making him the ruler over five cities.

The new king speaks this as a command, but it is not one that the servant is capable of obeying on his own. Rather, the king is using the command form to appoint the servant to a position of authority. Alternate translation: [I am making you the ruler of five cities]

In a spatial metaphor, the new king describes this servant as over these cities to mean that he will rule them. Alternate translation: [I am making you the ruler of five cities]
