OET (OET-RV) “List all the male Levites that are at least one month old. Count them by their families and clans.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֔י
DOM sons_of Lēvī
Here, Yahweh is speaking of the sons of Levi as if they were Levi’s direct children, but he is actually referring to all men who were descended from Levi. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the men descended from Levi]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
לְבֵ֥ית אֲבֹתָ֖ם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם
to,the_house_of their_ancestors_of,their to=their=clans
Here and throughout this chapter, the phrase house of their fathers refers to largest divisions within a single tribe. The word clans refers to the largest divisions of each house of their fathers. See the chapter introduction for more information. Alternate translation: [according to the house of their fathers, according to the clans that make up each house of their fathers]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לְבֵ֥ית אֲבֹתָ֖ם
to,the_house_of their_ancestors_of,their
See how you translated this phrase in [1:2](../01/02.md).
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם כָּל־זָכָ֛ר & תִּפְקְדֵֽם
to=their=clans all/each/any/every male & you,will_enroll_them
It might seem that the expression You shall count them contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language since it repeats the command from the first part of the verse. If so, you can shorten it. Alternate translation: [according to their clans, every male]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
כָּל־זָכָ֛ר מִבֶּן־חֹ֥דֶשׁ וָמַ֖עְלָה
all/each/any/every male from,a_son_of month and,upward,upwards
Here and throughout this chapter, the phrase from a son of a month and upward is a common expression of this culture to mean “someone who is at least one month old.” See the chapter introduction for more information. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [every male who is one month old or older]
OET (OET-LV) Enroll DOM the_descendants_of Lēvī to_the_house_of their_ancestors_of_their to_their_clans every_of male from_a_son_of a_month and_upward_upwards you_will_enrol_them.
OET (OET-RV) “List all the male Levites that are at least one month old. Count them by their families and clans.”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
