21:6 Note: KJB: 1Sam.21.5

OET (OET-RV)So the priest gave him the sacred bread, because there was no other bread there other than the previous day’s bread of the presence which had been removed from in front of Yahweh to be replaced by fresh bread.

(Some words not found in UHB: and,answered Dāvid DOM the=priest/officer and=he/it_said to=him/it that/for/because/then/when if woman/wife kept to/for=us as,yesterday before in/on/at/with,set_out,I and=they_were vessels_of the,young_men holy and=he road/way_of ordinary and,also that/for/because/then/when the=day holy in/on/at/with,vessels )

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [So since no bread was there if not the bread of the face having been removed from to the face of Yahweh to put hot bread on the day of its being taken away, the priest gave to him the holy]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

קֹ֑דֶשׁ

holy

The author is using the adjective holy as a noun to mean holy bread. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate this with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [holy bread]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-exceptions

כִּי֩ לֹא־הָ֨יָה שָׁ֜ם לֶ֗חֶם כִּֽי־אִם־לֶ֤חֶם הַפָּנִים֙

If it would appear in your language that the author was making a statement and then contradicting it, you could reword this as a positive statement. Alternate translation: [For the only bread that was there was the bread of the face]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לֶ֤חֶם הַפָּנִים֙ & מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה

See how you translated the term “fac” in [1:12](../01/12.md). Alternate translation: [the bread of the presence … from the presence of Yahweh]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

הַמּֽוּסָרִים֙

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [which they had removed]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּי֖וֹם הִלָּקְחֽוֹ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,answered Dāvid DOM the=priest/officer and=he/it_said to=him/it that/for/because/then/when if woman/wife kept to/for=us as,yesterday before in/on/at/with,set_out,I and=they_were vessels_of the,young_men holy and=he road/way_of ordinary and,also that/for/because/then/when the=day holy in/on/at/with,vessels )

The author is using the term day by association to mean the time when something happened. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [at the time of its being taken away]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

בְּי֖וֹם הִלָּקְחֽוֹ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,answered Dāvid DOM the=priest/officer and=he/it_said to=him/it that/for/because/then/when if woman/wife kept to/for=us as,yesterday before in/on/at/with,set_out,I and=they_were vessels_of the,young_men holy and=he road/way_of ordinary and,also that/for/because/then/when the=day holy in/on/at/with,vessels )

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:6 gave him the holy bread: Jesus referred to this incident to teach that meeting people’s physical needs takes precedence over rigid adherence to sacred institutions (see Matt 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28; Luke 6:1-5).
• The Bread of the Presence consisted of twelve loaves (possibly one representing each tribe) that were laid out on a table in the Holy Place. They were replaced every Sabbath (see Exod 25:30; Lev 24:5-9).

21:6 Note: KJB: 1Sam.21.5

OET (OET-RV)So the priest gave him the sacred bread, because there was no other bread there other than the previous day’s bread of the presence which had been removed from in front of Yahweh to be replaced by fresh bread.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
