OET (OET-RV) After David had finished speaking to the king, him and Yonatan became close friends, in fact Yonatan really loved him.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was when,finished,he to,speaking to/towards Shāʼūl and,soul Yōnātān/(Jonathan) knit in/on/at/with,soul Dāvid and,loved Yōnātān/(Jonathan) as,soul,his_own )
Very close friendship is spoken of as if it were binding together the souls of two people. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Jonathan felt a strong affection towards David” or “Jonathan committed himself to David” (See also: figs-activepassive)
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
(Occurrence 0) Jonathan loved him as his own soul
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was when,finished,he to,speaking to/towards Shāʼūl and,soul Yōnātān/(Jonathan) knit in/on/at/with,soul Dāvid and,loved Yōnātān/(Jonathan) as,soul,his_own )
Here “loved” refers to the love between friends, not romantic love. The word “soul” represents the person or the person’s life. Alternate translation: “Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself” or “Jonathan loved David as he loved his own life”
18:1 David and Jonathan had much in common: both were young and capable, were military heroes, had a robust faith in God, and had a claim to the throne of Israel. It is a testimony to Jonathan’s true character that he recognized and supported God’s choice of David to be the next king of Israel (see 18:3-4; 20:12-17).
• Jonathan loved David: See 20:17; 2 Sam 1:26. Others in this chapter are also said to love David: all Israel and Judah (1 Sam 18:16), Saul’s daughter Michal (18:20), and Saul’s servants (18:22). Some modern interpreters see a homosexual relationship between David and Jonathan, but the text implies nothing other than a deep and loyal friendship.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
