uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיַּעַזְבוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_abandoned there DOM idols_of,their and,he,carried_them_off Dāvid and,men_of,his )

The pronoun they refers to the Philistines who were fleeing from David’s army. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And the Philistines abandoned]

Note 2 topic: translate-symaction

וַיִּשָּׂאֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖ד וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_abandoned there DOM idols_of,their and,he,carried_them_off Dāvid and,men_of,his )

Taking away the Philistines’ idols was a symbolic action that illustrated the character of David’s victory over the Philistines and their gods. The Philistines had brought these idols into battle with them in the hopes that the gods they represented would help them defeat David and the Israelites. Instead, the gods themselves were shown to be helpless. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action in the text or in a footnote. Alternate translation: [and David and his men carried off their idols to show how weak and helpless the Philistine gods were compared to Yahweh]
