When we fought them, we did not leave any women alive to become their wives, and you did not give those young women to the men from the tribe of Benjamin. They stole them. The elders assume that their listeners will understand that they mean they did not take any married women as captives in the battle at Jabesh Gilead. The implication is that as a result, there are not enough wives for the surviving Benjaminites. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “we did not take any married women as captives in the battle against Jabesh Gilead whom we might now give to the Benjaminites, so there will not be enough wives for the surviving Benjaminites without your daughters and sisters”
