Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

עֲנֵ֤נִי

answer,me

This is an imperative, but it communicates a polite request rather than a command. Use a form in your language that communicates a polite request. It may be helpful to add an expression such as “please” to make this clear. Alternate translation: [Please answer me]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וְאַתָּ֛ה הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם אֲחֹרַנִּֽית

(Some words not found in UHB: answer,me YHWH answer,me so,that_they_may_know the,people the=this that/for/because/then/when you(ms) YHWH the=ʼElohīm and=you(ms) turned DOM heart_of,their back )

Elijah is stating the pronoun you separately, even though the verb translated as you have turned already includes this meaning. He is doing that to emphasize the personal role of Yahweh in turning the heart of the people back to himself. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. See how you translated the similar expression “you, you swore” in [1:17](../01/17.md). Alternate translation: [you are the one who has turned their heart back]

Note 3 topic: translate-tense

וְאַתָּ֛ה הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם אֲחֹרַנִּֽית

(Some words not found in UHB: answer,me YHWH answer,me so,that_they_may_know the,people the=this that/for/because/then/when you(ms) YHWH the=ʼElohīm and=you(ms) turned DOM heart_of,their back )

Elijah is using the past tense to describe something that is ongoing in the present. He is doing that in order to show that it will certainly be accomplished. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a different tense. Alternate translation: [you are the one who is turning their heart back]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְאַתָּ֛ה הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם אֲחֹרַנִּֽית

(Some words not found in UHB: answer,me YHWH answer,me so,that_they_may_know the,people the=this that/for/because/then/when you(ms) YHWH the=ʼElohīm and=you(ms) turned DOM heart_of,their back )

Elijah is speaking as if Yahweh had actually turned the heart of the people in a different direction, as if the heart were an object that could be physically rotated. He means that God has caused the people to trust in him again. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and you have caused them to trust in you again] or [and you are the one who is causing them to trust in you again]

Note 5 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם

DOM (Some words not found in UHB: answer,me YHWH answer,me so,that_they_may_know the,people the=this that/for/because/then/when you(ms) YHWH the=ʼElohīm and=you(ms) turned DOM heart_of,their back )

In this verse, the word heart is singular in form, but it refers to the hearts of all the people. If it would be helpful in your language, if you decide to retain this image, you could use the plural form of “heart.” Alternate translation: [their hearts]
