Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הִנֵּ֥ה

(Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! do according,to_of,your_words see/lo/see! I_give to/for=yourself(m) heart wise and,understanding which/who like,you not it_became to=your=face and,after,you not arise like,you )

See how you translated the similar expression in [1:14](../01/14.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

כִּדְבָרֶ֑יךָ

(Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! do according,to_of,your_words see/lo/see! I_give to/for=yourself(m) heart wise and,understanding which/who like,you not it_became to=your=face and,after,you not arise like,you )

Here, word represents what God said by using words. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [according to what you have said]

Note 3 topic: translate-tense

נָתַ֣תִּי לְךָ֗

(Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! do according,to_of,your_words see/lo/see! I_give to/for=yourself(m) heart wise and,understanding which/who like,you not it_became to=your=face and,after,you not arise like,you )

God is using the past tense I have given to describe something that is going to happen in the future. He is doing that in order to show that the event will certainly happen. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use the future tense. Alternate translation: [I will give you]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לֵ֚ב חָכָ֣ם וְנָב֔וֹן

heart wise and,understanding

Here, the heart represents a person’s thoughts. You may have a comparable expression in your language, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [a wise and discerning mind]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

חָכָ֣ם וְנָב֔וֹן

wise and,understanding

The terms wise and discerning mean similar things. God is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [very discerning]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לְפָנֶ֔יךָ

to=your=face

Here, to your face represents being before a person in time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [before you]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לֹא־יָק֥וּם כָּמֽוֹךָ

not not arise (Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! do according,to_of,your_words see/lo/see! I_give to/for=yourself(m) heart wise and,understanding which/who like,you not it_became to=your=face and,after,you not arise like,you )

Here God is using the term arise to mean “come to be,” as if a person who came into existence stood up from the ground. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and one like you will not live]
