BrTrAnd Moses said to Aaron, and Eleazar and Ithamar his sons that were left, Ye shall not make bare your heads, and ye shall not tear your garments; that ye die not, and so there should be wrath on all the congregation: but your brethren, even all the house of Israel, shall lament for the burning, with which they were burnt by the Lord.

ULTAnd Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, “Do not let your heads be loose and do not tear your clothes so that you will not die and against all the congregation he will not be angry. But your brothers, all of the house of Israel, shall weep for the burning that Yahweh has burned.

USTThen Moses said to Aaron and his two remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not mourn for your brothers as is customary. You should not allow your hair to hang down, nor should you tear your clothing. If you do, Yahweh may also kill you, and his anger may extend to the whole congregation as well. However, your fellow Israelites, every single person, should mourn because Yahweh is angry with his priests, as his burning fire has demonstrated.

BSB  § Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become disheveled [fn] and do not tear your garments, or else you will die, and the LORD will be angry with the whole congregation. But your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may mourn on account of the fire that the LORD has ignited.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:6 Eleazar and Ithamar were Aaron’s two remaining sons (Exod 6:23).
• leaving your hair uncombed: This practice and others like it were ways to show grief in biblical times (cp. Gen 37:29; 44:13; Deut 14:1; 2 Sam 1:11; Job 1:20; Jer 16:6; 47:5). As high priest, Aaron was prohibited from participating in these rituals or in any way displaying his grief (Lev 21:10). The injunction extended to Eleazar and Ithamar; if God’s representatives had shown grief on this occasion, it might have been interpreted by observers as disagreeing with God’s justice. However, the laypeople were allowed to mourn.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

רָֽאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם אַל־ תִּפְרָ֣עוּ׀ וּבִגְדֵיכֶ֤ם לֹֽא־ תִפְרֹ֨מוּ֙

hair,your_all's not dishevel and,clothes,your_all's not tear

These are symbolic actions associated with mourning for dead relatives. If your language does not have similar actions associated with a period of mourning, consider explaining the meaning of these actions in a footnote or in the text of your translation. Alternate translation: “Do not mourn for your relatives by letting your heads be loose or by tearing your clothes”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

רָֽאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם אַל־תִּפְרָ֣עוּ ׀

hair,your_all's not dishevel

Here, the word heads refers by association to the hair of one’s head, so the expression Do not let your heads be loose refers to letting one’s hair hang down disheveled and unkempt. It is implied that Aaron’s sons’ hair was long enough to hang down from their heads. As the previous note suggests, this was a common practice associated with mourning for a dead relative. If it would be helpful in your language, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Do not let your long hair hang down loose”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

רָֽאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם & וּבִגְדֵיכֶ֤ם & וְלֹ֣א תָמֻ֔תוּ & וַאֲחֵיכֶם֙

hair,your_all's & and,clothes,your_all's & and=not die & and,brothers,your_all's

Here the pronouns you and your are plural. They refer to Aaron’s sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, so use the plural form in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

רָֽאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם אַל־תִּפְרָ֣עוּ ׀ וּבִגְדֵיכֶ֤ם לֹֽא־תִפְרֹ֨מוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א תָמֻ֔תוּ וְעַ֥ל כָּל־הָעֵדָ֖ה יִקְצֹ֑ף

hair,your_all's not dishevel and,clothes,your_all's not tear and=not die and,with all/each/any/every the,community angry

Here, so that marks you will not die and against all the congregation he will not be angry as the goal or purpose of Do not let your heads be loose and do not tear your clothes . Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that this is the purpose. Altrnate translation: “Do not let your heads be loose and do not tear your clothes. If you do not do these things, you will not die and against all the congregation he will not be angry.

Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns

יִקְצֹ֑ף

angry

The pronoun he refers to Yahweh. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will not be angry”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַאֲחֵיכֶם֙

and,brothers,your_all's

Here, the word brothers does not mean male relatives. Rather, it likely refers to all their fellow Israelites, who were to be considered to be members of a single extended family. Alternate translation: “But all your fellow Israelites”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

כָּל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

all/each/any/every all/each/any/every house_of Yisrael

Here, house refers to the whole people of Israel. If it would be helpful in your language, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “all the people of Israel”

Note 8 topic: writing-poetry

הַשְּׂרֵפָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר שָׂרַ֥ף יְהוָֽה

the,burning which/who destroyed_by_fire YHWH

Here, a verb and its object come from the same root. The phrase Yahweh has burned translates as a verb that is related to the noun translated as burning. The repetition of related words adds emphasis to the statement. If your language can repeat words for emphasis and your language has comparable terms that you can use in your own translation, it would be appropriate to use that construction here in your translation.

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶת־הַשְּׂרֵפָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר שָׂרַ֥ף יְהוָֽה׃

DOM the,burning which/who destroyed_by_fire (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Mosheh to/near ʼAhₐron and,to,Eleazar and,to,Ithamar sons,his hair,your_all's not dishevel and,clothes,your_all's not tear and=not die and,with all/each/any/every the,community angry and,brothers,your_all's all/each/any/every house_of Yisrael mourn DOM the,burning which/who destroyed_by_fire YHWH )

The word burning implies the fire that came out from the Holy Place and consumed Nadab and Abihu. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “for the way that Yahweh killed Nadab and Abihu with fire”
