TSNTyndale Study Notes:

19:1-22 This account considers the procedure by which ordinary Israelites defiled by contact with a corpse (see 9:4-12; Lev 17:15; 21:1-4, 11-12) could regain ceremonial purity and keep from defiling the Tabernacle. God’s holiness requires that the place where his presence dwells be kept pure and set apart from pollution (cp. 1 Cor 6:9-11, 18-20).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) purify himself

(Some words not found in UHB: he/it purify in=him/it in_the=day the=third and,in/on/at/with,day the=seventh clean and=if not purify in_the=day the=third and,in/on/at/with,day the=seventh not clean )

The person would ask someone who is clean to purify him by sprinkling on him some water mixed with the cows ashes. Asking someone to purify him is spoken of as if he were to purify himself. Alternate translation: “ask someone to purify him”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

(Occurrence 0) if he does not purify himself the third day, then he will not be clean on the seventh day

(Some words not found in UHB: he/it purify in=him/it in_the=day the=third and,in/on/at/with,day the=seventh clean and=if not purify in_the=day the=third and,in/on/at/with,day the=seventh not clean )

This can be stated in a positive form. Alternate translation: “he will be clean on the seventh day only if he purifies himself the third day”
