Living for Christ
From prison Paul writes, “To me, living means living for Christ” (1:21). Why are believers called to devote their lives to Christ?
1. Believers acknowledge that they owe everything to Christ, including their salvation. Devoting their life to his service expresses their eternal indebtedness and gratitude (see Rom 12:1).
2. Believers acknowledge Christ as their master and Lord and submit to Christ’s rule in their lives. They recognize that they belong to the Lord and no longer live simply for themselves (see Rom 14:7-9; 2 Cor 5:14-15).
3. Believers now share in Christ’s death and resurrection—they have died to themselves and have risen with him (see Rom 6:3-14; cp. Gal 2:19-20). They have a new identity in Christ (Rom 8:14-17; Eph 1:11, 14; Phil 3:20).
4. Believers recognize that everything of value is found in Christ. Things of the world that once seemed important have lost their attraction; nothing compares to the infinite value of knowing Christ (Phil 3:7-11; Eph 1:3–3:21; Col 1:15–3:4).

Paul wanted to bring honor to Christ whether he lived or died. He knew that dying and being with Christ would be the supreme good, but he also wanted to be with the Philippians to help them grow in their faith. And he expected that God would let him continue living and helping others.
Paul wanted very much to go and be with Christ, but it was more necessary for the Philippian believers that he continue living.
so that through my coming to you again your exultation in Christ Jesus will resound on account of me.
so that when I am with you again you will boast even more about Christ Jesus because of me.
My purpose is that you will praise Christ Jesus very much when you see that he has brought me back to you again.
so that: The phrase so that can be understood in two ways:
in order that: 1:26 is the purpose of 1:25;
with the result that: 1:26 is the result of 1:25.
The first interpretation is the most likely to be correct, and it is recommended that you follow it (1).
through my coming to you again: When Paul went to see them again, his visit would cause them to boast more about Christ. Compare with 1:27b.
your exultation in Christ Jesus: The Greek word that the BSB translates as exultation here means “cause for glorying” or “reason for boasting or being proud.” In this context this is a good kind of boasting or being proud. Therefore, another way to translate your exultation in Christ Jesus is: “you will be proud/boast about Jesus Christ.”
In some languages it may be necessary to use a direct or indirect quote here. For example:
you will say, “Christ Jesus is very good”
you will say that Christ Jesus is very good
will resound: The phrase will resound means “will increase, will be more abundant.”
on account of me: The Greek phrase en emoi that the BSB translates as on account of me literally means “in me.” There are two ways to understand it here.
It means “because of me”; that is, the Philippians would boast about Jesus Christ because of Paul or on account of Paul. (BSB, NIV, REB, NET, GW, CEV, NJB)
It means “about me”; that is, the Philippians would boast about Paul or be proud of Paul. (GNT, NASB)
The first interpretation is recommended (1).
The phrase on account of me repeats in part the meaning of the phrase “through my being with you again.” If it is unnatural in your language to include both phrases, you may need to combine the two phrases into one. See 1:26 in the Display.

Here, the phrase so that indicates that what follows is the purpose of what came before it. The purpose of Paul remaining alive, ([1:25](../01/25.md)), was to increase the Philippian’s boasting in Christ. In your translation, use the method your language uses to indicate purpose.

If it would be clearer in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun boasting by expressing its meaning in a verb phrase or in some other way that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [glorying in] or [rejoicing in]

Here the word coming describes Paul’s travel from the perspective of the Philippians. In your language, it may be more natural to describe his travel from Paul’s perspective and use a word such as “going.” Here and in verse [27](../01/27.md), use the word or phrase that is most natural in your language.
