10 Hear what Yahweh has to say, you who are like Sedom’s rulers.
≈ Listen to God’s instructions, you who are like Amorah’s people:
11 “What do your many sacrifices mean to me?” asks Yahweh.
“I’ve had enough of the burnt offerings of rams,
and the fat of fattened animals,
and I’m not pleased by the blood of bulls or lambs or goats.[ref]
12 Who told you all that you had to appear in front of me?
Who said that you all should come and trample through my courtyards?
13 Don’t keep bringing me worthless offerings.
They smell terribly bad to me.
New moon holidays and sabbaths, calling of assemblies—
I can’t stand your disobedience mixed with your festive celebrations.
14 My spirit hates your religious holidays and your feasts on the calendar.
They’ve become a burden to me that I’m tired of carrying.
15 So when you spread out your hands, I just hide my eyes from you all.
Even though you multiply prayers, I don’t listen
because your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash yourselves and get cleaned up.
Remove the evil of your actions from in front of me.
≈ Strive for justice.
Serve justice for the fatherless.
≈ Stand up for the widow in court.”
18 Yahweh says, “Come, now, and let’s work things out together.
Even though your sins are like scarlet, they’ll become as white like snow.
≈ Even though they’re red like crimson, they’ll become like wool.
19 If you’re willing and ready to obey,
you’ll all eat the best food from the land,
20 but if you refuse and rebel,
war will be what eats you all.
That’s what Yahweh is telling you.”
21 “I hate, I despise your festivals,
≈ I take no delight in your formal gatherings.[ref]
22 Even though you all offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I won’t accept them,
≈ nor will I take any notice of your fellowship offerings of fattened animals.
23 Take the noise of your songs away from me.
≈ I won’t listen to the sound of your harps.
24 Instead, let justice flow like water,
≈ and righteousness like a constantly flowing stream.
8 Then Yahweh’s message came to Zekaryah (Zechariah): 9 “Commander-in-chief Yahweh says, ‘Judge with true justice, loyal commitment, and mercy. Let everyone do that for their neighbour. 10 Don’t oppress widows or orphans, foreigners or poor people, and none of you should plot any harm against another person, even in your mind.’
11 But they refused to pay attention, turning away stubbornly and blocking their ears so they couldn’t hear. 12 They made their hearts as hard as rock so they couldn’t hear the written law or Commander-in-chief Yahweh’s contemporary messages. He’d sent those messages to the people by his spirit in earlier times through the words of the prophets, but the people refused to listen, so Commander-in-chief Yahweh was very angry with them. 13 And so it was that when he called, they didn’t listen. In the same way,” said Commander-in-chief Yahweh, “they’ll call out to me for help, but I won’t listen. 14 I’ll use a whirlwind to scatter them to other nations that they’ve never been to before. Then the land here will become desolate after they’ve gone because no one will pass through this land or return to it since the people have made their pleasant country into a wasteland.”
23 You mustn’t present a false statement. Don’t conspire with a wicked person to give false evidence.[ref] 2 Don’t just follow the crowd into doing what’s wrong, and don’t just say what others say in court if it’s untrue, 3 and don’t automatically favour the poor in court either.[ref]
4 If you come across your enemy’s cow or donkey going astray, you must certainly take it back to them.[ref] 5 If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has fallen to the ground under its load, you mustn’t just walk way—you must certainly help them with it.
6 You mustn’t deny justice to the poor in their lawsuits.[ref] 7 Stay far way from deceptive words. You mustn’t kill innocent or honest people because I won’t allow wicked people to be declared innocent. 8 You mustn’t accept bribes, because bribes stop people from being unbiased and they undermine the words of honest people.
9 You mustn’t oppress foreigners since you yourselves know how that feels because you all were foreigners in Mitsrayim (Egypt).[ref]
16:18 Strive for justice
18 You must appoint judges and other officials throughout your tribes, in all the towns that your god Yahweh is giving to you. They must judge the people fairly and correctly. 19 You mustn’t pervert justice or give favours. Don’t accept bribes because a bribe causes an otherwise wise person to ignore evil and misrepresents what innocent people say.[ref] 20 True justice is what you should aim for, so that you’ll occupy and live in the land that your god Yahweh is giving you.
8 Open your mouth for those who can’t speak—
for the cause of all those who are dying.
82:1 God the defender
1 God stands in the divine assembly.
He renders judgement among the gods.
2 For how long will you judge unjustly
and show favouritism to the wicked? (Instrumental break.)
3 Defend the poor and the fatherless.
≈ Maintain the rights of those who are afflicted and destitute.
≈ help them escape from the control of the wicked people.
5 They neither know nor understand.
They wander around in the darkness.
All the earth’s foundations crumble.
and all of you are sons of the highest one.[ref]
7 Nevertheless you will die like men
and fall like one of the leaders.”
82:1 Note: KJB: Ps.82.1
13 The king[fn] who built his house by doing what’s not right
≈ and built his upper rooms by unjustly forcing people to work,
→ won’t end well.
He forced the citizens to work without getting paid—
≈ not giving them their wages.
14 He’d decided to build himself a large house with spacious upper rooms,
so he cut out large windows for it, and panelled it with cedar,
and painted it with red ochre.
15 Does having the best cedar make you a better king?
Didn’t your father Yoshiyah (Josiah) eat and drink well?
However, he administered justice and did what was right
→ so things went well for him.
16 He took up the cause of the poor and needy,
→ so things went well for him.
Yahweh declares that that’s what it means to know me,
17 but your desires and motives are only focused on your dishonest gain,
and on oppression and practicing extortion.
22:13 Referring here to Yehudah’s King Yehoyakim—see verse 24.
22 Don’t delude yourselves by just listening to the message, but put it into practice in your daily lives. 23 Anyone who is just a listener of the message and does nothing with it is like someone who looks at their face in a mirror 24 but goes away after having a look and then immediately forgets what they looked like. 25 However the person who investigates the perfect law that gives freedom, and then sticks with it, not being just an observer that forgets about it but rather a person who puts it into practice, this person will prosper in whatever they do.
26 If anyone supposes that they’re religious but doesn’t guard what comes out of their mouth, then that person’s religion is only skin deep and hasn’t affected their heart. 27 A person who wants to truly serve our God and father with a pure heart would be visiting orphans and widows in their difficulties and staying unstained by worldly ideas.
