23:1-9 This call for justice includes a miscellaneous list of covenant requirements, most of which have to do with fairness and integrity.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וְלֹא־תַעֲנֶ֣ה

and=not testify

Alternate translation: “and you also must not speak”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרֵֽי־רַבִּ֖ים לְרָעֹ֑ת

not fall_in after crowd in,wrongdoing

This is a metaphor that describes one’s agreeing with a group of people as if he actually walked behind that group. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “You must not do the evil that the crowd wants” or “You must not agree with the majority for evil”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

לִנְטֹ֛ת & לְהַטֹּֽת

to,turn_aside & to,pervert_justice

The phrase “from justice” is omitted twice but should be understood in both cases. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the context. Alternate translation: “to turn aside from justice … that turns aside from justice”

לִנְטֹ֛ת & לְהַטֹּֽת

to,turn_aside & to,pervert_justice

Here, to turn aside means to do illegal or immoral actions that result in an unjust ruling. Alternate translation: “to pervert justice … that perverts justice”
