UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh continues telling Moses his laws for the people of Israel.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֖א שֵׁ֣מַע שָׁ֑וְא

not spread report false

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of report and emptiness, you can express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “You must not report emptily” or “You must not report falsely”

שֵׁ֣מַע שָׁ֑וְא

report false

Alternate translation: “a false testimony”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אַל־תָּ֤שֶׁת יָֽדְךָ֙ עִם־רָשָׁ֔ע

not join hand,your with wicked

Here, to put your hand with the wicked means to support the lies that he is telling in order to harm someone else. The image is of putting out your hand to help him, to make him stronger than he would be on his own. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent idiom or use plain language. Alternate translation: “You must not assist the wicked”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עֵ֥ד חָמָֽס

witness violence/cruelty

Here, violence can also mean “wrong.” Either way, it means to harm another person by committing injustice (violence to justice) by lying. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “a false witness”
