OET (OET-RV) Some Gadites joined David at the wilderness stronghold. They were very strong army warriors, ready for battle with shields and spears. Their faces were fierce like lions, but they could run across the hills like gazelles.
Note 1 topic: translate-names
This begins a list of the men from the tribe of Gad who joined David.

(Occurrence 0) whose faces were as fierce as the faces of lions
(Some words not found in UHB: and,Joelah and,Zebadiah sons_of Yeroham from/more_than the,Gedor )
Here the word “faces” represents the men and the lions. Their faces express the fierceness with which they fight battles. Alternate translation: “who were as fierce in battle as lions hunting prey” (See also: figs-explicit)
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
(Occurrence 0) They were as swift as gazelles on the mountains
(Some words not found in UHB: and,Joelah and,Zebadiah sons_of Yeroham from/more_than the,Gedor )
This hyperbole compares how swiftly these men were able to run with how swiftly gazelles are able to run over rugged mountain terrain.
(Occurrence 0) gazelles
(Some words not found in UHB: and,Joelah and,Zebadiah sons_of Yeroham from/more_than the,Gedor )
animals similar to deer that can run quickly over hills and rough ground
12:1-22 Support for making David king did not begin with Saul’s demise. When Saul was king and David was a fugitive, warriors went to David and eventually became a vast camp of various tribes, representing all of Israel. Even relatives of Saul deserted to David and supported him as king (12:2). Of course, David was prudent about such deserters (12:17), making sure they were not traitors who would betray him to Saul. Before David’s actual anointing took place at Hebron, the will of the people reflected the will of God that David should become king.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
