The young men want Rehoboam to use the term scorpions within an image to mean that he would discipline the Israelites more severely than his father did. If you decide to retain the image in your translation, you could show what this term means. The term scorpions could be: (1) the name of whips that had cutting objects in their ends such as iron points, hooks, or thorns. Alternate translation: [with barbed whips] or (2) a reference to actual scorpions, insects that have very painful stingers in their tails. Alternate translation: [by having scorpions sting you]
