There are three levels of quotation here. The author is quoting what Yahweh said to Shemaiah (level 1), continuing from the previous verse. At the start of this verse, Yahweh is speaking directly to Shemaiah (level 2). Yahweh then tells Shemaiah what he wants him to say to Rehoboam and the people with him (level 3). Use the appropriate punctuation in your language to mark these levels of quotation. Alternatively, you could translate this so that there are not second-level or third-level quotations.

See how you translated the similar expression in [1:25](../01/25.md). Yahweh is speaking of travel to a higher elevation, specifically, from Judah to “Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim,” which Jeroboam made his capital, as the author explains in the next verse. Alternate translation: [You shall not go]

אֲחֵי⁠כֶ֣ם

countrymen_of,your(pl)

Yahweh is speaking as if the people of the northern tribes were actually brothers to the people of Judah. He means that they are all descendants of the same ancestor, Jacob. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [your kinsmen]

שׁ֚וּבוּ אִ֣ישׁ לְ⁠בֵית֔⁠וֹ

return (a)_man to,his_own_of,house

Yahweh is using a man to his house as a common expression of this culture to mean that the soldiers should not continue this military campaign. Instead, each one should go back to his home and family. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. If you have already translated the book of 2 Samuel, see how you translated the similar expression “a man to his tent” in [2 Samuel 18:17](../2sa/18/17.md), which similarly refers to a cessation of military activities. Alternate translation: [Each of you, leave the army and return home]

The author is using the term word to represent what Yahweh said by using words. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [what Yahweh had said to them … just as Yahweh had told them to do]

The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and they returned from the military campaign in order to go home]
