Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way

(Some words not found in UHB: and,divided to/for=them DOM the=earth/land to,pass in/on/at/with,it Ahab went in/on/at/with,way one(ms) for=him/it=being_alone and,Obadiah went in/on/at/with,way one(ms) for=him/it=being_alone )

The phrase “by himself” emphasizes that Ahab and Obadiah went in separate directions, not necessarily that no one was with Ahab. Alternate translation: “Ahab lead a team in one direction and Obadiah lead a team in the other direction”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:3-6 Due to the severity of the continuing drought, Ahab and Obadiah, his chief officer (cp. 4:6; 16:9), set out to locate sufficient water and grass for the king’s horses. These provisions were crucial for military preparedness. Assyrian king Shalmaneser III wrote that Ahab put some 2,000 horse-drawn chariots into the Battle of Qarqar (853 BC). Solomon had also had many horses and chariots (10:26).
