OET (OET-RV) King Ahav told Ovadyah, “We’ll go across the country to all the springs and all the valleys that water sometimes flows in. Perhaps we’ll find some grass so we can keep a horse or a mule or two alive and not lose our breeding stock.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
save the horses and mules alive … not lose all the animals

These two phrases mean basically the same thing and are combined for emphasis. Alternate translation: “prevent the horses and mules from dying”
18:3-6 Due to the severity of the continuing drought, Ahab and Obadiah, his chief officer (cp. 4:6; 16:9), set out to locate sufficient water and grass for the king’s horses. These provisions were crucial for military preparedness. Assyrian king Shalmaneser III wrote that Ahab put some 2,000 horse-drawn chariots into the Battle of Qarqar (853 BC). Solomon had also had many horses and chariots (10:26).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
