OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_said you you_know if/because_that to_me it_belonged the_royalty and_on_me all_of they_set Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) faces_of_their to_become_king and_it_has_turned_round the_royalty and_it_became to_brother_of_my if/because from_YHWH it_belonged for_him/it.
OET (OET-RV) “You yourself know that the kingship was for me as the oldest son,” he said, “and all Yisrael wanted me to reign. But then Yahweh decided that it was for my brother, and then everything got turned around.

See how you translated the same expression in [2:5](../02/05.md). Alternate translation: [You know quite well]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְעָלַ֞י שָׂ֧מוּ כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם לִמְלֹ֑ךְ
and,on,me (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said you know that/for/because/then/when to=me she/it_was the=royalty and,on,me set all Yisrael faces_of,their to,become_king and,it_has_turned_round the=royalty and=it_became to,brother_of,my that/for/because/then/when from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it )
Adonijah is using the term Israel to mean the Israelite people, who were descendants of a man named Israel, also known as Jacob. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [and all of the Israelites had set their faces on me to reign]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְעָלַ֞י שָׂ֧מוּ כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם לִמְלֹ֑ךְ
and,on,me (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said you know that/for/because/then/when to=me she/it_was the=royalty and,on,me set all Yisrael faces_of,their to,become_king and,it_has_turned_round the=royalty and=it_became to,brother_of,my that/for/because/then/when from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it )
Adonijah is using had set their faces on me as a common expression of his culture to mean “were expecting me to be their next king.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and all of the Israelites were looking to me as their next king] or [and all of the Israelites were expecting me to reign]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
וְעָלַ֞י & כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל
and,on,me & all (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said you know that/for/because/then/when to=me she/it_was the=royalty and,on,me set all Yisrael faces_of,their to,become_king and,it_has_turned_round the=royalty and=it_became to,brother_of,my that/for/because/then/when from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it )
Adonijah is saying all as an overstatement for emphasis. It is not true that every Israelite wanted him to be the king. Instead, as Bathsheba said in [1:20](../01/20.md), the Israelites were waiting for David to tell them who the next king would be. However, it would be good to show in your translation that Adonijah is making an overstatement to try to persuade Bathsheba to do what he wants. So we recommend that you do not translate his statement as a less emphatic one.
Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
וַתִּסֹּ֤ב הַמְּלוּכָה֙ וַתְּהִ֣י לְאָחִ֔י כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה הָ֥יְתָה לּֽוֹ
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said you know that/for/because/then/when to=me she/it_was the=royalty and,on,me set all Yisrael faces_of,their to,become_king and,it_has_turned_round the=royalty and=it_became to,brother_of,my that/for/because/then/when from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it )
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [But since it was to him from Yahweh, the kingdom turned and became to my brother]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
וַתִּסֹּ֤ב הַמְּלוּכָה֙ וַתְּהִ֣י לְאָחִ֔י
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said you know that/for/because/then/when to=me she/it_was the=royalty and,on,me set all Yisrael faces_of,their to,become_king and,it_has_turned_round the=royalty and=it_became to,brother_of,my that/for/because/then/when from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it )
Adonijah is speaking of the kingdom of Israel as if it had been a living thing that could have turned and moved from him to his brother. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [But my brother became the king instead]
Note 7 topic: translate-kinship
לְאָחִ֔י
to,brother_of,my
See how you translated the similar expression in [2:7](../02/07.md). Alternate translation: [my younger brother] or [my half-brother]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
מֵיְהוָ֖ה הָ֥יְתָה לּֽוֹ
from,Yahweh she/it_was for=him/it
Adonijah is using it was to him from Yahweh as a common expression of his culture to mean “Yahweh wanted him to have it.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh wanted him to have it]
OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_said you you_know if/because_that to_me it_belonged the_royalty and_on_me all_of they_set Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) faces_of_their to_become_king and_it_has_turned_round the_royalty and_it_became to_brother_of_my if/because from_YHWH it_belonged for_him/it.
OET (OET-RV) “You yourself know that the kingship was for me as the oldest son,” he said, “and all Yisrael wanted me to reign. But then Yahweh decided that it was for my brother, and then everything got turned around.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
