OET (OET-LV) And_the_house the_this it_will_be most_high every_of one_who_passes_by on/upon/above_him/it he_will_be_appalled and_he_will_hiss and_people_will_say concerning what YHWH did_he_do thus to_land (the)_this and_to_house (the)_this.
OET (OET-RV) As this temple is on a hill and very visible, everyone who passes anywhere nearby will see it and will be appalled and will hiss and they’ll say, ‘What did the people do that was so bad that Yahweh did that to this country and to this temple?’
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
וְהַבַּ֤יִת הַזֶּה֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה עֶלְי֔וֹן
(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,house the=this will_belong heap all/each/any/every passes on/upon/above=him/it appalled and,he_will_hiss and,people_will_say on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? he/it_had_made YHWH this to,land (the),this and,to,house (the),this )
This could mean: (1) that the author is leaving out a word that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. The parallel passage in [2 Chronicles 7:21](../2ch/07/21.md) includes the word “which.” You could supply it in your translation if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [And this temple, which is exalted] or [And although this temple is now exalted] or (2) that the author is saying that the temple will be exalted in the sense of lifted up or heaped up as a ruin. Alternate translation: [And this temple will become a heap of ruins]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
כָּל־עֹבֵ֥ר עָלָ֖יו יִשֹּׁ֣ם וְשָׁרָ֑ק
(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,house the=this will_belong heap all/each/any/every passes on/upon/above=him/it appalled and,he_will_hiss and,people_will_say on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? he/it_had_made YHWH this to,land (the),this and,to,house (the),this )
The expression will be astonished is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [what has happened to it will astonish everyone passing by it, and they will hiss]
Note 3 topic: translate-symaction
וְשָׁרָ֑ק
(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,house the=this will_belong heap all/each/any/every passes on/upon/above=him/it appalled and,he_will_hiss and,people_will_say on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? he/it_had_made YHWH this to,land (the),this and,to,house (the),this )
To hiss was to make a sound like a snake by forcing breath through one’s teeth. In this culture, hissing was a way of expressing derision and contempt, like booing or whistling in some modern cultures. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action in the text or in a footnote. Alternate translation: [and will hiss in derision]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
וְאָמְר֗וּ עַל־מֶ֨ה עָשָׂ֤ה יְהוָה֙ כָּ֔כָה לָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את וְלַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּֽה
and,people_will_say on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? (Some words not found in UHB: and,the,house the=this will_belong heap all/each/any/every passes on/upon/above=him/it appalled and,he_will_hiss and,people_will_say on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? he/it_had_made YHWH this to,land (the),this and,to,house (the),this )
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [And they will ask why Yahweh did this to this land and to this temple]
Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns
וְאָמְר֗וּ
and,people_will_say
The author is using the pronoun they in a general sense here, not to refer to specific people. Use an expression for this that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [And people will ask]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
