The author assumes that readers will understand that by they went around, he means that these armies went around the southern end of the Dead Sea. You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. You may wish to use the name that this body of water had in biblical times, “the Sea of the Arabah.” Alternate translation: [and they went around the Dead Sea] or [and they went around the Sea of the Arabah]

The author is using the expression at their feet to represent that these animals were walking behind the soldiers as they marched.
