OET (OET-LV)In_every day of_me being with you_all in the temple, you_all_ not _stretched_out your hands against me.
But this is the hour of_you_all, and the power of_the darkness.

OET (OET-RV)I was there in the temple with you all everyday and yet you didn’t arrest me there. Yes, because this is your time: with the power of the darkness.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:47–53: Judas helped Jesus’ enemies to find him and arrest him

In this section Judas arrived at the place where Jesus and his disciples were talking. Judas was leading a crowd of men who had come to arrest Jesus and take him to the Jewish leaders for trial. Many of these men were probably temple guards. Judas had agreed to greet Jesus with a kiss so that they would know which person to arrest.

The disciples saw what was about to happen, and they asked Jesus if they should fight to prevent his arrest. Peter cut off one man’s ear, but Jesus healed the man and told his disciples not to fight against his arrest. The temple guards arrested Jesus, and he did not resist them.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Is Arrested (GW)

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus (NRSV)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 26:47–56, Mark 14:43–50, and John 18:3–11.

22:53a

Every day I was with you in the temple courts,

Every day: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Every day means “day by day, regularly, for many days.” Jesus probably referred especially to each day in the week that had just passed. Other ways to translate it are:

Day after day (REB)

daily (NASB)

I was with you in the temple courts: Here Jesus was still speaking to the men who came to arrest him. He reminded them that they had seen him every day in the temple courts. He had taught there publicly each day of that week. Many of them had heard what he said. Other ways to translate this clause are:

I have been there with you in the templeYakan back translation on TW.

You were with me as I taught in the temple courts.

temple courts: The Greek word that the BSB translates as temple courts is literally “temple.” Here it refers to the public area around the temple building, not to the building itself. For more information, see the notes on 21:37a. See also temple, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

22:53b

and you did not lay a hand on Me.

you did not lay a hand on Me: The Greek clause that the BSB translates literally as you did not lay a hand on Me is an idiom. In this context it implies the meaning “you did nothing to arrest/capture me.” Here is another way to translate this:

you did not try to arrest me (GNT)

Jesus implied here that if he had really done anything wrong, the authorities would have arrested him openly. They did not arrest him in public because they were afraid that the people might harm them for arresting an innocent man.

22:53c

But this hour belongs to you

But this hour belongs to you: In this context hour refers to a particular short period of time. Here it has the meaning “opportunity.” The clause this hour belongs to you indicates that on that particular night, in the dark, they had the opportunity to arrest Jesus and to harm him. It also implies that God had allowed them to have that brief opportunity. It was only a short time that they would have to harm him.

Some other ways to translate the clause are:

This is your time

This opportunity has been given to you

You have been allowed this time

God has allowed you to have this brief time

In some languages it may be necessary to make clear the purpose of the hour. For example:

this is your hour to act (GNT)

this is the time that belongs to you…so that you can seize meYakan back translation on TW.

22:53d

and to the power of darkness.”

and to the power of darkness: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as and to the power of darkness is more literally “and the power/authority of darkness.” It was nighttime, and dark, when the crowd of men came to arrest Jesus. The darkness symbolizes Satan and his evil power, including the power of the evil spirits that he rules. The phrase the power of darkness implies here that Satan was influencing the people who arrested Jesus.

In some languages it may be necessary to make explicit that darkness refers here to evil or to Satan. For example:

when in the darkness Satan does what he wants to do

evil power rules/works now in the dark

when Satan uses his dark/evil power

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

in the temple

Only priests were allowed to enter the temple building, so Jesus means the temple courtyard. He is using the word for the entire building to refer to one part of it. Alternate translation: [in the temple courtyard]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ ἐμέ

not ˱you_all˲_stretched_out (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καθʼ ἡμέραν ὄντος μού μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τάς χεῖρας ἐπʼ ἐμέ Ἀλλʼ αὕτη ἐστίν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα καί ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους)

As in [20:19](../20/19.md), here this expression means to arrest a person by association with the way that arresting officers might physically take hold of the person with their hands. Alternate translation: [you did not arrest me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

αὕτη ἐστὶν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα

this (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καθʼ ἡμέραν ὄντος μού μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τάς χεῖρας ἐπʼ ἐμέ Ἀλλʼ αὕτη ἐστίν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα καί ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους)

Jesus is using the term hour to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [this is a time when you can do whatever you want]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καθʼ ἡμέραν ὄντος μού μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τάς χεῖρας ἐπʼ ἐμέ Ἀλλʼ αὕτη ἐστίν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα καί ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους)

Jesus is using this phrase to characterize the hour further. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could show that by repeating the reference to “time” from earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: [because it is a time when darkness is in authority]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

καὶ ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καθʼ ἡμέραν ὄντος μού μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τάς χεῖρας ἐπʼ ἐμέ Ἀλλʼ αὕτη ἐστίν ὑμῶν ἡ ὥρα καί ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους)

Jesus is referring to Satan as darkness. Alternate translation: [because it is a time when God is allowing Satan to do what he wants]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
