OET (OET-LV)And the ones around him having_seen what going_to be, they_said:

OET (OET-RV)When the other apprentices around Yeshua saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Master, should we attack with our swords?”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:47–53: Judas helped Jesus’ enemies to find him and arrest him

In this section Judas arrived at the place where Jesus and his disciples were talking. Judas was leading a crowd of men who had come to arrest Jesus and take him to the Jewish leaders for trial. Many of these men were probably temple guards. Judas had agreed to greet Jesus with a kiss so that they would know which person to arrest.

The disciples saw what was about to happen, and they asked Jesus if they should fight to prevent his arrest. Peter cut off one man’s ear, but Jesus healed the man and told his disciples not to fight against his arrest. The temple guards arrested Jesus, and he did not resist them.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Is Arrested (GW)

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus (NRSV)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 26:47–56, Mark 14:43–50, and John 18:3–11.

22:49a

Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen

Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen: This clause indicates that Jesus’ disciples realized what was about to happen. Judas had betrayed Jesus, and people in the crowd had come to arrest him. In some languages it may be natural to translate this clause as a separate sentence:

Then Jesus’ followers realized what was about to happen. So…

Those around Jesus: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as Those around Jesus is more literally “those around him.” Here it refers to the disciples. Another way to translate it is:

Jesus’ disciples who were standing around him

saw: In this context saw means “understood” or “realized.”

what was about to happen: The phrase what was about to happen refers to the fact that the crowd was about to arrest Jesus. In some languages it may be helpful or necessary to make this explicit. For example:

that the crowd had come to arrest Jesus

22:49b

and said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”

and said: The phrase and said introduces what the disciples asked Jesus. Probably one of the disciples spoke for the group. Some other ways to introduce the question are:

they asked Jesus

they said to Jesus

Lord, should we strike with our swords?: Here the disciples asked Jesus if he wanted them to use their swords to fight against the crowd. They wanted to defend Jesus. It is clear from 22:50 that one of the disciples did not wait for Jesus to reply. Some other ways to translate this are:

Lord, do you want us(excl) to fight/attack them with our swords?

Lord, shall we(excl) fight them? We brought our swords!

Lord, should we use our swords to fight? (GW)

we: The word we here does not include Jesus. The disciples offered to fight for him.

our swords: The phrase our swords probably refers back to the two swords mentioned in 22:38. See the note at 22:38a.

uW Translation Notes:

οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν

the_‹ones› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἰδόντες Δέ οἱ περί αὐτόν τό ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ)

The expression the ones around him refers to Jesus' disciples. Alternate translation: [Jesus’ disciples, who were around him,]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸ ἐσόμενον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἰδόντες Δέ οἱ περί αὐτόν τό ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ)

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state more explicitly what this means. Alternate translation: [that the Jewish leaders and soldiers who had come were going to arrest Jesus]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ

¬if ˱we˲_˓will_be˒_striking with ˓the˒_sword

This was an idiomatic way to ask a question. Alternate translation: [should we strike with the sword]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ

¬if ˱we˲_˓will_be˒_striking with ˓the˒_sword

The disciples may be asking specifically not about what weapon to use, but generally whether they should fight back to prevent Jesus from being arrested. In that case they would be using one kind of weapon, a sword, to mean fighting in general. The disciples said in [22:38](../22/38.md) that they had two swords, but they could also have resisted by further means. Alternate translation: [should we fight to defend you]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ

¬if ˱we˲_˓will_be˒_striking with ˓the˒_sword

Alternatively, the disciples may implicitly be asking whether this was the kind of occasion for which Jesus told them in [22:38](../22/38.md) that they should have swords. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate that explicitly. Alternate translation: [you told us we should have swords; should we use them now]
