SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:24–30: Jesus taught his apostles about greatness

In this section Jesus’ apostles began to argue about which of them was the greatest. Because of this argument, Jesus taught them that leaders among his disciples should be different from other leaders who are not his disciples. His disciples should be servants and not harsh, arrogant leaders. This instruction applies not only to Jesus’ twelve apostles but to everyone who becomes a leader among Jesus’ other followers.

The apostles had a similar argument in 9:46 and Mark 9:34. In 9:46 this argument occurred just after Jesus had predicted in 9:44 that he would be betrayed. The similar argument here in Section 22:24–30 is also mentioned immediately after Jesus said that he would be betrayed.

Some examples of heading for this section are:

Jesus again teaches humility (JBP)

The Argument about Greatness (GNT)

Jesus taught that the one who serves others is the greatest among them

Some English versions, such as the NIV, do not have a section heading here. You may divide the sections in the way that is most helpful for the people in your area.

22:28

You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials.

You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as stood by Me is more literally “remained with me.” It indicates that the apostles had been faithful to him even during his most difficult times. Some other ways to translate this verse are:

You have stayed with me all through my trials (GNT)

You are the men who have stood by me faithfully in my trials (NJB)

You: In Greek the pronoun You is emphatic here. It implies that the twelve apostles were the men who had faithfully stayed with Jesus and shared all his hard times. Translate the emphasis in a natural way in your language. See the examples in the preceding note.

My trials: In this context the phrase My trials probably refers to the various troubles and difficulties that Jesus suffered during the years of his ministry. Other ways to translate the phrase are:

all my troubles (CEV)

the troubles that have tested me (GW)

In some languages there may be an idiom to express this idea. For example:

all that I have gone through (JBP)

uW Translation Notes:

οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ’ ἐμοῦ, ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου

the_‹ones› ˓having˒_continued with me in the trials (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Δέ ἐστέ οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μού)

Alternate translation: [the ones who have stayed with me through my struggles]
