Section 22:66–23:25: Leaders put Jesus on trial and condemned him to die

Luke indicates that Jesus had several trials. These trials can also be considered to be several parts of the same trial. Luke recorded the details of four of these trials. The chart here lists them according to who was leading at each trial:

22:66–71

Pilate again

In all of Jesus’ trials, there was no one who could prove that Jesus had broken any law of God or man. However, even though he had not done anything wrong, the Roman governor Pilate sentenced him to die on a cross.

The Notes suggest a section heading for each of the trials in the chart. However, you may decide to have one heading for Section Group 22:66–23:25 like the one suggested in the Section Group box above. Another example of a heading for this section group is:

“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

If You are the Christ, tell us: The members of the council demanded that Jesus say whether he was the Messiah/Christ. This demand can also be translated as a question. Mark 14:55 makes it clear that the high priest spoke to Jesus for the whole council. Some other ways to translate their demand are:

Tell us, are you the Messiah? (GW)

Tell us whether you are the Messiah.

the Christ: Here the word Christ is used as a title. The Jews used this title to refer to the person whom God had appointed and promised to send as king and savior. The title Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah,” and the two words have the same meaning.

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe…”: Jesus did not give a yes or no answer to the council. He showed by his answer that he knew that they would not believe the truth about him. If he said, “Yes, I am the Messiah,” they would refuse to believe him. In Greek the clause you will not believe is emphatic.Green (p. 795) points out, “Jesus’ response takes the grammatical form of a future-more-vivid conditional sentence, indicating his conviction that the Jewish leadership will almost certainly not believe him or answer his questions. That they will not answer Jesus has already been indicated in earlier dialogue in the temple (chapter 20). In particular, when Jesus asks concerning the legitimacy of John’s baptism, they refused to answer him in a straightforward way (20:1–8). Added to this now is Jesus’ expectation that, even if faced with direct evidence of Jesus’ messiahship, the Jewish leaders would be incapable of belief (cf. Acts 13:40–41).” They would certainly not believe what he said.

Some ways to translate Jesus’ answer are:

Jesus said to them, “If I tell you, you won’t believe me…” (GW)

believe: In this context the word believe refers to accepting that a statement is true. For more information about this sense of believe, see believe, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [The elders said to Jesus]

This sounds like a conditional statement, but it is actually an imperative. Alternate translation: [Tell us whether you are the Messiah]
