OET (OET-LV)Because on_one_hand the son of_ the _man is_going according_to the place having_been_designated, on_the_other_hand woe to_ the that _man by whom he_is_being_given_over.

OET (OET-RV)Now, humanity’s child has to endure what’s been previously designated, but on the other hand, it won’t end well for the man who turns him in.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:14–23: Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine with a special meaning

In this section Jesus ate his last meal with his twelve disciples before he died. During this Passover meal, Jesus told them about the new covenant that he was making with them. He took bread and gave thanks to God. Then he divided the bread into pieces and gave it to his disciples to share. He said to them, “This is my body, given for you.” After the main meal, he gave his disciples a cup of wine to drink from. He said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” When Jesus said these things, he indicated that he would sacrifice himself by dying as a substitute for his disciples to save them from slavery to sin. By doing this, he would fulfill the real meaning of Passover. As God saved the people of Israel who put the blood of the Passover lamb on their doors, he will save the people who trust in Jesus’ sacrifice for them.

Jesus told his disciples to continue to remember him by taking bread and wine as his body and blood given for them. This thanksgiving service is now called the Eucharist, from the Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” It is also called the Lord’s Supper and Holy Communion.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

The Lord’s Supper (NET)

Jesus established the Thanksgiving/Eucharist celebration

Jesus sacrifices his body and blood to save his disciples

Jesus makes a new covenant with his disciples

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 26:26–30, Mark 14:22–26, and 1 Corinthians 11:23–25.

22:22a

Indeed, the Son of Man will go as it has been determined,

Indeed: In the Greek text 22:22a begins with a conjunction that is often translated as “because” or “for.” The BSB translates this word as Indeed. In this context it introduces an explanation. Verse 22 explains why the betrayer was with them: God had decreed that Jesus must die. However, the verse does not imply that Judas had any good reason or excuse for betraying Jesus (22:21).Some commentators say that the connecting word at the beginning of 22:22a indicates a logical connection between the presence of Jesus’ betrayer and the fact that God had decreed that Jesus will leave them by dying. See, for example, Marshall, p. 809, and Arndt, p. 441, note on hoti. When Judas betrayed Jesus, God used Judas’ evil action to prepare the way for Jesus to die to redeem his people, as God had planned before sending Jesus into the world. Some other English versions do not translate this conjunction. Connect the verse to 22:21 in a natural way in your language.

the Son of Man will go: In this context the clause the Son of Man will go is a figurative way to imply that he will die. In some languages it is necessary to make this explicit, as many English versions do. For example:

The Son of Man will die (GNT)

I, the Son of Man, must die (NLT96)

In some languages it may be possible to use a different figurative way or an indirect way to say that Jesus will die. Translate it in a natural way in your language.

the Son of Man: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the Son of Man is literally “the Son of the human/person.” See the note on 17:24a–b for more information and translation advice. Here Jesus used the title the Son of Man to refer to himself. In many languages it is necessary to make this explicit. See the second example in the preceding note.

as it has been determined: The clause as it has been determined means “as it has been decided or planned.” It indicates that God had already planned that Jesus must die. The verb has been determined is passive. The Jews often showed respect for God by using a passive form instead of referring to him directly. The verb does not imply here that Jesus’ enemies decreed his death.

In many languages it is necessary to refer to God explicitly here. For example:

as God has decided (GNT)

since it is part of God’s plan (NLT96)

according to what is determined for me by GodWestern Bukidnon Manobo back translation on TW.

General Comment on 22:22a

The statement in 22:22a implies that God had planned that Jesus had to die many years before it was going to happen. In some languages it may be more natural to mention God’s plan before saying that it must happen. For example:

What God has planned for the Son of Man will happen (NCV)

Use a natural order in your language.

22:22b

but woe to that man who betrays Him.”

but: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as but introduces a contrast between 22:22a and 22:22b. Although Jesus must die, the person who betrays him will endure a terrible future. Most English versions use but to introduce the contrast. Translate the contrast in a natural way in your language.

woe to that man who betrays Him: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as woe to that man who betrays Him means that something terrible will happen to the person who will betray Jesus. In this context, it implies that God will punish that person severely. The word woe is not a curse. Jesus was not asking God to curse this person.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

it will be terrible for the one who betrays him (CEV)

the person who is betraying me is really to be pitiedYakan back translation on TW.

the person who betrays me to my enemies will have a terrible punishment

God will severely punish the person who betrays me.

The phrase “woe to the one” occurs also in 17:1. See how you translated it there. The word woe also occurs in 6:24–26. For help in translating the word betrays, see the notes on 22:21a–b.

Jesus is giving the reason why one of his disciples is going to betray him, as he said in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could put this reason before the result by combining this verse and the previous one into a verse bridge. See the suggestions in the note about the similar situation in [22:16](../22/16.md) for how you might do this.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
