OET (OET-RV) “Why would we need any more witnesses than this?” they asked, “because we heard it ourselves straight out of his mouth.”
Luke indicates that Jesus had several trials. These trials can also be considered to be several parts of the same trial. Luke recorded the details of four of these trials. The chart here lists them according to who was leading at each trial:

23:13–25 | Pilate again |
In all of Jesus’ trials, there was no one who could prove that Jesus had broken any law of God or man. However, even though he had not done anything wrong, the Roman governor Pilate sentenced him to die on a cross.
The Notes suggest a section heading for each of the trials in the chart. However, you may decide to have one heading for Section Group 22:66–23:25 like the one suggested in the Section Group box above. Another example of a heading for this section group is:
The leaders tried and condemned Jesus
“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared.
Then they asked one another, “Why should we look for any other witnesses?
When they heard that, they said, “Now we(incl) do not need any more witnesses to prove that he is guilty.
“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared: The Greek words that the BSB translates as they declared are literally “but/and they said.” The BSB places these words in the middle of what the council of the elders said. This is good English style. However, in some languages, it may be necessary to put these words where they are in the Greek, at the beginning of 22:71a. For example:
Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony?” (NIV)
Place them where it is natural in your language.
Why do we need any more testimony?: This is a rhetorical question. It implies that Jesus’ answer was enough to condemn him. So they did not need any other witnesses to give testimony against him. The council members said this to emphasize that they did not need anyone else to testify against Jesus.
Some ways to translate this emphasis are:
As a rhetorical question. For example:
Why do we need other witnesses? (NLT)
What further evidence do we need? (REB)
As a statement. For example:
We do not need any more evidence against him.
That statement of his is all we need to execute him!
Translate this emphasis in a way that is natural in your language.
“We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.”
We have heard proof of his guilt coming from his own mouth.”
We have heard him condemn himself by his own words.”
We(incl) have heard him testify against himself!”
The words that just came from his own mouth are enough to condemn him!”
We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips: The Jewish leaders indicated here that what they just heard Jesus say proved that he was guilty. When he said that he was the Son of God, they thought that was all they needed to show that he deserved to be executed. Other ways to say this are:
We’ve heard him say it ourselves. (GW)
We have heard him condemn himself by his own words.
We: In this verse We is emphatic. They did not need any other witnesses to confirm what they themselves had heard. In some languages the statement itself expresses this emphasis. In other languages there may be another natural way to express it. Here is another way to translate this:
We ourselves have heard what he said! (GNT)
from His own lips: This is an idiom. It refers emphatically to something that Jesus himself said. Some ways to translate this idiom are:
Use a similar idiom in your language. For example, another English idiom is:
from his own mouth
Translate the meaning directly. For example:
He said it himself! (CEV)

The elders are using the question form for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate their words as a statement or an exclamation. Alternate translation: [We have no further need for testimony!]

The elders are speaking to one another about themselves, so we and ourselves would be exclusive, if your language marks that form.

If it would be helpful in your language, you put this phrase before the previous phrase, as UST does, since this phrase gives the reason for the conclusion that the previous phrase states.

The elders are using the expression his own mouth to refer to what Jesus has just said using his mouth. Alternate translation: [we … have heard what he just said]

The implications are that what Jesus has just said proves a charge of blasphemy by itself, because Jesus has claimed to be equal with God. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [we ourselves have heard him say that he is equal with God]
22:71 Why do we need other witnesses? The high council regarded Jesus’ confirmation that he was both the Messiah and the Son of God as a blasphemous claim and thus as proof of his guilt.
