SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:14–21: Paul encouraged them and said he was happy with his work/ministry

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome that he was convinced that they were good, had knowledge, and were able to teach each other. He reminded them that he had been very bold in this letter. He wanted the Gentiles to be acceptable to God regarding their faith.

He told the believers in Rome that he was proud of his work for God. His work was to help Gentiles to believe in Jesus. He told them that he always wanted to preach the gospel where people did not know about Christ.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles

Paul’s Reason for Writing (NLT)

15:17

Therefore I exult in Christ Jesus in my service to God.

Therefore I exult in Christ Jesus in my service to God: Some English versions place the phrase in Christ Jesus first in the clause to emphasize it or perhaps to separate it from my service to God to be more clear. It is not emphasized in the Greek. Put it in its usual place in your language.

Therefore…in Christ Jesus: The word Therefore is at the beginning of the words it introduces. In some languages, the word must be somewhere else in the clause. For example:

In Christ Jesus, then (ESV)

Therefore: The Greek word here introduces a consequence of the Gentiles being an acceptable gift to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. For example:

then (ESV)

in Christ Jesus: Here the word in indicates that Paul was joined with Jesus in a close relationship. See how you translated this phrase in 6:11 or 8:39.

I exult…in my service to God: The Greek is literally “I have the boasting of the (things) toward/pertaining-to God.” It indicates that Paul was able to boast in his work as an apostle of God. He could boast because all that he accomplished was by God’s power. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

I can be proud of my service for God (GNT)

I am proud of what I have done for God in Christ Jesus (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

οὖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔχω Οὖν τήν καύχησιν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τά πρός τόν Θεόν)

The word Therefore indicates that what follows is a logical conclusion. Therefore here indicates that what follows in this verse is the result of what Paul said in the previous verse. Use a natural way in your language for indicating result. Alternate translation: [Because of these things] or [As a result of these things]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

in Christ Jesus

See how you translated this phrase in [6:23](../06/23.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἔχω & καύχησιν

˱I˲_˓am˒_having & boasting

Here, Paul speaks of a boast as if it were an object someone can have. He means that he is rightfully able to boast. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I can boast]

OET (OET-RV)Therefore I’m boasting in Messiah Yeshua about things to do with God.
