OET (OET-LV)in_order that to_be me a_minister of_chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) to the pagans, sacredly-servicing the good_message of_ the _god, in_order_that may_become the offering of_the pagans acceptable, having_been_sanctified by the_spirit holy.

OET (OET-RV)so that I’d be a minister to the non-Jews for Messiah Yeshua, sharing God’s good message so that the offering of the non-Jews would be acceptable to him, having been purified by the holy spirit. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:14–21: Paul encouraged them and said he was happy with his work/ministry

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome that he was convinced that they were good, had knowledge, and were able to teach each other. He reminded them that he had been very bold in this letter. He wanted the Gentiles to be acceptable to God regarding their faith.

He told the believers in Rome that he was proud of his work for God. His work was to help Gentiles to believe in Jesus. He told them that he always wanted to preach the gospel where people did not know about Christ.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles

Paul’s Reason for Writing (NLT)

15:16a

to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles

to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles: Here the word to introduces the purpose for God giving Paul the ability to do the work of an apostle. For example:

so that I would be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles

God already fulfilled this purpose before Paul wrote this letter. In some languages all purpose clauses are unfulfilled. If that is true in your language, translate that this is a result or imply that. For example:

and so I became a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles

and I became a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles

a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles: The Greek word that the BSB translates as minister refers to a servant in religious work.See BDAG. Paul here said that he did the work that Jesus gave to him. That work was to help Gentiles believe in Jesus and to help them grow in their faith. For example:

a servant of Christ Jesus to work for the Gentiles (GNT)

Christ Jesus: There is a textual issue in 15:16a: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the words Christ Jesus (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). (2) Some Greek manuscripts have the words Jesus Christ (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). The order of the words Christ Jesus emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah. However, in some languages the order Christ Jesus is not natural. See how you translated this phrase in 15:6.

15:16b

in the priestly service of the gospel of God,

in the priestly service: Here the word in introduces the way that Paul was a servant. He acted like a priest, helping people come near to God. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

do the work of a priest in the service of (CEV)

I serve like a priest (GNT)

ministering as a priest (NASB)

priestly service: Paul used the Greek word as a figure of speech to indicate that his work was religious work, like a priest. He was thinking generally of priestly duties, such as helping people to worship. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

priestly duty (NIV)

The word or phrase you use here should not refer primarily to animal sacrifice.

In some languages a literal translation would not have the correct meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

the gospel: The Greek word that the BSB translates as gospel means “good news.” Here this word refers to God’s good news about Jesus Christ. See how you translated this word in 1:1 or 11:28.

15:16c

so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God,

so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God: The words so that introduce the purpose for Paul’s work. At the time of this letter, his work was not yet complete but he had helped many Gentiles believe in Jesus.

The word might does not imply that Paul was not certain that God would accept the Gentiles. Your translation should not imply that Paul was not certain.

the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God: This phrase is a figure of speech that speaks of the Gentiles as being like an offering to God. It indicates that Paul hoped that the lives (or faith) of the Gentiles would be acceptable to God because they believed in Jesus.

In some languages a literal translation would not have the correct meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

15:16d

sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

sanctified by the Holy Spirit: This is more information about the Gentiles who believe in Jesus. In some languages it is more natural to have this as a separate sentence. For example:

The Holy Spirit has sanctified them.

This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause, as in the above example.

sanctified: This refers to the Holy Spirit making believers holy. He has changed them from being sinners to being holy. Here the word “holy” refers to being chosen to serve God and obey him.KBT, holy, sense B.1. Here are other ways to translate this word:

made holy (NCV)

made-into his holy peopleKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:16 special messenger: The Greek word (leitourgos, “servant” or “minister”) could refer to almost any kind of servant, but Jews often applied the word to priests. Paul probably chose this word to emphasize the priestly nature of his ministry.
• to you Gentiles: Paul stresses the Gentile flavor of the church in Rome (see also 1:6-7). This does not mean that there were no Jews in the church (see 16:3-16), but Gentiles had become the majority.
• present you as an acceptable offering to God: Paul was fulfilling Isa 66:19-20.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
