SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:14–21: Paul encouraged them and said he was happy with his work/ministry

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome that he was convinced that they were good, had knowledge, and were able to teach each other. He reminded them that he had been very bold in this letter. He wanted the Gentiles to be acceptable to God regarding their faith.

He told the believers in Rome that he was proud of his work for God. His work was to help Gentiles to believe in Jesus. He told them that he always wanted to preach the gospel where people did not know about Christ.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles

Paul’s Reason for Writing (NLT)

15:19a

by the power of signs and wonders, and by the power of the Spirit of God.

by the power of signs and wonders: This indicates that Paul’s work as an apostle was supported by signs and wonders. God enabled Paul to do signs and wonders, which showed that God had made him an apostle and these signs and wonders were also a part of this work. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in the power of signs and wonders (NASB)

and also by using amazing signs and miraclesKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

signs and wonders: Both signs and wonders refer to miracles. See the definitions of both below. Both terms tell us something that Paul wanted us to know about these miracles. These miracles both had a symbolic meaning and amazed people.

In some languages a literal translation would wrongly refer to two different kinds of things. If that is true in your language, indicate that both terms describe miracles. For example:

miracles that were signs and that amazed people

the signs which were amazing things done by God

signs: This refers to miracles that have a symbolic meaning. They suggest or point to something other than themselves. These miracles showed that the God about whom Paul preached was powerful and empowered Paul, and the message about Jesus that Paul preached was true. Here are other ways to translate this word:

great signs

omens/portents

miracles that showed that my message was from God

wonders: This word refers to miracles that amaze people. Here are other ways to translate this word:

marvels

amazing miracles

by the power of the Spirit of God: This phrase indicates that the power of the Spirit of God enabled Paul to say and do the things he did, his “word and deed” of 15:18c. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in the power of the Spirit of God

through the power of the Spirit of God

the Spirit of God: There is a textual issue here.

  1. The words are spirit of-god, as the BSB translates. (BSB, GNT, NJB, ESV, NIV11, NRSV, KJV, NLT, GW, NET)

  2. The word is spirit. For example:

    the Spirit (NASB) (NIV84, NASB)

  3. The words are spirit of-holy. For example:

the Holy Spirit (RSV) (RSV, REB, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the UBS5 supports it, although they indicate that they had difficulty deciding which option was most likely correct.

Either way, this phrase refers to the Holy Spirit. Some languages may need to make that clear. For example:

God’s Holy Spirit

the Holy Spirit (RSV)

15:19b

So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum,

So: This introduces a result of Paul’s work as an apostle (15:18b–19a).

from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum: This refers in general to the regions between Jerusalem and Illyricum that Paul and other apostles had visited at that time. The words all the way around indicate that the area is not a straight figure. Below is the author’s general idea of the included regions.

Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum (NASB)

from Jerusalem going around as far as Illyricum

Illyricum: This is the name for a Roman province to the east of Italy and northwest of Greece. In Greek it is spelled Illurikon. In some languages translators will want to:

15:19c

I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ: This indicates that Paul had proclaimed the gospel of Christ in the regions between Jerusalem and Illyricum. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

I have completed my work for the gospel of Christ

I have done all that God told me to do for the gospel of Christ

fully proclaimed: This includes, as he did in many cities, preaching, helping people accept Jesus as Savior, praying, establishing churches, and (probably) choosing leaders for those churches, as well as explaining his ministry, as he did in Jerusalem. See the examples above.

the gospel of Christ: The word of here indicates that the gospel is about the Christ, that is, Jesus.

General Comment on 15:19b–c

In some languages it will be more natural to have the main part of the clause in front of the locations. For example:

so that I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum

This clause indicates an additional means by which Christ produced through Paul “the obedience of the Gentiles” that is referred to in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [and by means of the power of signs and wonders]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The word wonders describes the character of the miraculous signs that the Spirit enabled Paul to do. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this meaning with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [of wonderful miraculous signs]

This clause indicates that the Spirit of God empowered Paul’s “word and deed” and signs and wonders to result in non-Jews trusting in Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [empowered by the Spirit of God]

The word Illyricum is the name of a Roman province that was close to Italy.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

Paul speaks of preaching the gospel throughout an entire area as if he had fulfilled the gospel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I have thoroughly proclaimed the gospel of Christ]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:19 I have fully presented the Good News of Christ: Paul was not claiming that the work of evangelism had been completed in these regions. His point was that churches had been planted in enough major population centers so that those churches could carry on the work of evangelism themselves. Paul’s own distinctive ministry of planting foundational and strategic churches had been fulfilled.
• An arc drawn from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum would include the areas where Paul had planted churches (southern Galatia, Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece). Illyricum was a Roman province that occupied most of the coastlands northeast of Italy along the Adriatic Sea, from modern-day Albania to Croatia.

OET (OET-LV)in power of_signs and wonders in the_power of_the_spirit of_god, so_that me from Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) and around unto the Illurikon, to_have_fulfilled the good_message of_the chosen_one/messiah,

OET (OET-RV)powerful miracles and amazing things in the power of God’s spirit, so that from Yerushalem all the way around to Illyricum, I’ve obeyed the Messiah’s good message.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
